Laiken Zay singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Smyrna High to a 3-2 victory over Cape Henlopen in Henlopen Conference softball on Monday afternoon.

The Vikings had tied the game at 2-2 on RBI from Hannah Jones and Jordyn Virdin in the top of the seventh.

Kaelyn Press had three of Smyrna’s 10 hits with Zay, Lexi Moore and Madison Drummond adding two hits each. Winning pitcher Jessica Anderson threw a five-hitter and struck out nine.

Raegan Jackson had two hits for Cape

Red Lion 14, Lake Forest 9: The Lions erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the sixth to break open a 5-5 tie.

The Spartans (3-1) answered with four runs in the top of the seventh before falling short.

Lake’s Brooke Glanden, Kerrigan Simpson and Kayla Thompson all homered in a contest that featured 23 hits, including nine for extra bases.

Baseball

Delmarva Christian 2, Salisbury Christian 0: Trent Mills drove in the winning run as the Royals scored both runs in the top of the sixth.

Brandon Schlabach pitched five and a third shutout winnings while Michael Briggs and Wes Hobbs had two hits apiece.

Lacrosse

GIRLS, Caesar Rodney 26, St. Thomas More 15: Noelle Ruggeriero netted eight goals as the Riders (1-5) picked up their first win.

Lillian Ayers added six goals and three assists while Eibhlin Steele had three goals and a pair of assists for CR. Eight different players scored for the Riders.

Gillian Crawford netted nine goals for the Ravens with Jessica Crawford scoring three.

Ursuline 15, Polytech 11: The Raiders jumped out to a 9-4 halftime lead before holding off the Panthers.

Cam Dennis (1 assist) had four goals for Polytech (2-1) with Madi McKay (1 assist) and Madison Knight tallying three goals each.

Goalie Shannon Stephan made eight saves as Ursuline outshot the Panthers, 29-19.

Smyrna 12, Newark Charter 11: Juliana Kolakowski’s six goals paced the Eagles to the victory.

Emma Mayhew and Madeline Wilber both had two goals with Katelynn Porter stopping eight shots.

Dover 13, Kent County, Md. 9: Grace Gast netted five goals and an assist to spark the Senators.

Riley McQuaide had three goals for Dover, which outscored Kent County, 8-5, in the second half. The Senators, who got nine draw controls from Cydney Barnes, held a 25-16 edge in shots.

BOYS, Cape Henlopen 9, Ocean City N.J. 6: Jaycob Trimmer netted three goals for the Vikings in their nonconference win.

Luke D’Ambrogi contributed a goal and three assists while Brendan Kane made nine saves for Cape.

St. Elizabeth 11, Lake Forest 4: Jarred Camper scored twice for the Spartans in the nonconference loss.

Wicomico 11, Sussex Tech 10: Wicomico outscored the Ravens, 7-2, in the third quarter to rally from a 6-2 halftime deficit.

Daniel Wilson tallied seven goals and an assist with Hunter Severs making 14 saves for Sussex Tech.

Delmar 11, Salisbury 1: The Wildcats (1-3) posted their first victory of the season.

Indian River 16, Delmarva Christian 1: The Indians netted 10 first-quarter goals before improving to 4-0.

Girls’ soccer

Newark Charter 5, Milford 2: The Buccaneers fell behind 3-0 at halftime before coming up short.

Daphne Leighty scored both Milford goals while Amanda Sauer made 11 saves.

St. Georges 1, Smyrna 0: Britney Stewart’s first-half goal made the difference for the Hawks.

Smyrna’s Cassidy Cook made 12 saves as St. Georges held a 13-9 edge in shots.

College softball

Wolverines post sweep: Wesley College downed Penn State-Brandywine, 3-1, 5-4, in a nonconference twinbill.

With the opener tied 1-1, Lauren Hoffman drove home two runs with a single to left field that scored Megan DiRubbio and Samantha Burns (Polytech).

Pitcher Lindsay Siok (Milford) earned the win with a complete-game effort while Karina Cardona went 3-for-4 for the Wolverines (16-10).

Trailing 3-0 in the nightcap, Wesley rallied for five runs in the bottom of the third. Nina Marcano had a two-run single before Hoffman followed with a two-run triple.

Siok went 4.2 innings of relief to earn her second win of the day and her 12th win of the season.

Hens’ Kolofer honored: Delaware junior third baseman Giovanna Kolofer was named the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Player of the Week.

Kolofer posted 13 hits in 19 at-bats for a .684 batting average during Delaware’s five games. Kolofer is tied for third in the CAA and tied for the team lead along with Anna Steinmetz with a .391 batting average.

She also leads the team with 36 hits, ranks second with 19 runs scored and six stolen bases, and is third with 20 RBI.
