After a pair of defeats earlier in the week, the St. Thomas More Academy girls’ basketball team bounced back with a 51-40 victory over Sussex Central High on Thursday night.

Aniah Patterson paced the Ravens (9-3) with 13 points.

St. Thomas More trailed at halftime but took control when it outscored the Golden Knights 17-8 in the third quarter.

Wilmington Charter 46, Smyrna 36: Melena Credle led the Eagles with 15 points but they suffered a nonconference defeat.

Polytech 57, Woodbridge 28: The Panthers earned the road victory on Thursday.

Boys’ basketball

Sussex Central 67, Sussex Academy 30: Ryhlee Matthews netted a team-high 15 points in the win for the Golden Knights.

Devon Reynolds also finished in double figures with 12 points. Sussex Academy’s Zachary Zalewski scored a game-high 22 points for Sussex Academy.

A.I. du Pont 74, Sussex Tech 54: The game was tied at halftime but the Ravens fell in the nonconference contest.

Wrestling

Dover 45, Sussex Tech 22: Taquee Williams (134 pounds) and Divine Watkins (154) both had pins as the Senators earned the Henlopen North win on Wednesday night.

Dover won 10 of the 14 individual bouts as it improved to 8-2 overall.

Robert Van Pelt (197), Andrew Hawkins (222) and Carl Schirmer (287) all won by pin for the Ravens.

College soccer

UD names Barroqueiro as coach: Mike Barroqueiro, whose resume includes working at the NCAA Division I level as an assistant and head coach over the last decade, has been selected as the new women’s soccer head coach at the University of Delaware.

A former head coach at Iona College, Barroqueiro has spent the last four seasons at North Carolina State.

Barroqueiro becomes just the second head coach in Delaware women’s soccer history as he replaces Scott Grzenda, who led the Hens for the previous 26 seasons before stepping down following the 2016 campaign.

“Delaware is an ideal location with a beautiful campus and has a prestigious academic reputation and highly-competitive athletic atmosphere,” said Barroqueiro. “But I realized quickly that it’s the people that make this place truly special. The future is bright for Blue Hen soccer and I’m very proud to be a part of that.”

A 2005 graduate of Rutgers, Barroqueiro served as associate head coach at North Carolina State the last four seasons and this past fall led the Wolfpack to its best season in 21 years as the squad went 11-9-2, posted two victories in the NCAA Tournament — its first NCAA appearance since 1996 — and earned its first NCAA Sweet 16 berth.

The entire NCSU coaching staff was named the NSCAA Southeast Staff of the Year and was elected as finalists for the NSCAA National Staff of the Year.

College lacrosse

CAA signs deal with Lax Sports Network: The Colonial Athletic Association has signed an agreement with Lax Sports Network which will provide unprecedented coverage of the conference’s men’s and women’s lacrosse programs.

Lax Sports Network will produce a “CAA Game of the Week” broadcast package that includes 10 men’s and five women’s regular-season lacrosse contests during the 2017 campaign. The network will also provide live coverage of the semifinals of the CAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship and the CAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship.

In addition to the Game of the Week telecasts, Lax Sports Network will produce live pre-game, halftime and post-game shows surrounding each contest. The network will be involved in promoting CAA lacrosse through its various social media platforms.

The finals of the 2017 CAA Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Championships will be televised throughout the nation by the American Sports Network for the third year in a row.
