Roundup: No. 3 seed Delmar tops Lake 5-1 in field hockey tourney opener

Third-seeded Delmar High tallied four first-half goals in posting a 5-1 victory over No. 14 Lake Forest in the first round of the DIAA field hockey state tournament on Tuesday afternoon.

The win puts the Wildcats (15-1) in Saturday’s quarterfinals where they will face the winner of Wednesday’s matchup between Milford and Concord.

Peyton Kemp had three goals and an assist for Delmar, which finished with advantages of 22-4 in shots and 23-3 in corners. Jordan Moore and Morgan Fletcher also scored goals with goalie Madison Blewitt making three saves.

Mya Maddox scored for Lake Forest (8-6-2) with Brooke Tucker stopping 14 shots.

Cape Henlopen 2, Indian River 0: Jacqueline Cannon and Mia Carulli scored goals in the final 18 minutes to lift the fifth-seeded Vikings to the tourney win.

Five-time defending state champion Cape (14-2) will play again in Saturday’s quarterfinals against the winner of Wednesday’s contest between Tower Hill and Sussex Tech.

The Vikings held advantages of 15-0 in shots and 10-2 in corners.

Mya Parks stopped six shots for the 12th-seeded Indians (10-6).

Unified football

Smyrna-CR game postponed: The DIAA Unified football state quarterfinal matchup between Smyrna and Caesar Rodney, scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed because of predicted bad weather.

The game will now be played on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Smyrna.

College football

Wesley’s Caine earns honor: After helping the Wesley College football team to a 44-27 victory over No. 18 Salisbury on Saturday, senior linebacker Roderick Caine was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week.

Caine made five total tackles, and finished with a sack, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. The Wolverines square off with William Paterson on Saturday, November 12 at 1:00 p.m.

College bowling

DSU’s Burkholder receives MEAC award: Delaware State’s Elizabeth Burkholder named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Bowler of the Week for her performance at the Sam Houston State Kat Klash Bowling Invitational last weekend.

Burkholder finished seventh out of 114 competitors with a five-game average of 212.8 (1064 total (pinfall) in the individual tournament standings.

In a consistent performance, she topped the 200 mark in each of the first four games, with a high of 226 in the first contest and 225 in the second.

Burkholder, a pre-season All-MEAC first-team selection, is third on the Hornets with an average of 207.8 in 10 games this season.
