Delaware came out strong before putting the finishing touches on in the last minutes as the No. 3 Blue Hens defeated No. 8 Princeton, 5-3, in field hockey at Rullo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Juniors Kiki Bink and Greta Nauck each tallied two goals for Delaware (3-1). The Hens split two games with the Tigers last season, edging Princeton, 3-2, in the NCAA national semifinals,

Delaware led 4-1 on Sunday only to have the Tigers close within 4-3. But Nauck’s goals in the final three minutes sealed the victory.

“Overall, I’m happy with today’s outcome,” said coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. “We played well in spurts, but we have to find ways to show our domination throughout the entire game and put away quality teams earlier instead of trying to find a way to win it at the end.”

Senior Taylor Lister added three assists for the Hens. Lister, who had 11 assists last season, has now recorded seven in the past two contests.

Freshman Femke Strien also contributed a goal while redshirt senior Kayla Devlin notched two assists and a defensive save.

Senior goalie Emmeline Oltmans collected three saves for her second win of the season.

Nauck moved into a tie for fifth place in program history with 115 career points alongside Caesar Rodney High grad Casey Howard (2005-09).

Wesley drops two: The Wesley College field hockey team spent its Labor Day weekend in Arkansas and Tennessee, falling to Hendrix, 3-2, on Friday and 4-0 to Rhodes on Sunday.

Against Hendrix, the Wolverines knotted up the score at 1-1 when Alexiss Hulse scored on an assist from Jessica Behornar. The Wolverines then took a 2-1 lead in the 17th minute when Emily Wagner tallied a goal on an assist from Kaila Hindt.

Against Rhodes, Rebecca Dvorak registered two shots, including one on goal. Bridget Wood made six saves in 35 minutes while Lauren Berry stopped four shots in 26 minutes.

College soccer

MEN, Delaware 2, Holy Cross: The Blue Hens (2-0-1) got two goals from senior Carlos Perales in the victory on Sunday.

Junior goalkeeper Todd Morton earned his second shutout of the season, recording seven saves. The preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association selection lowered his goals’ allowed average to just 0.31.

WOMEN, Delaware 2, Lehigh 1: Freshmen Riley Dixon and Olivia Schuck led the Blue Hens to the double-overtime victory.

The Blue Hens (2-2-1) trailed 1-0 in the 73rd minute when Jessica Kennett sent a perfect corner kick into the box that found a streaking Schuck, who calmly deposited the ball into the back of the net.

In the second overtime period, Krista Trinidad found Dixon, who rocketed home a shot from about 20-yards away for the game-winner.

Goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos registered four saves and has allowed just one goal in three consecutive matches.

Hartford 4, Delaware State 0: Four different players found the back of the net on Sunday, as the Hawks blanked the Hornets.

Hartford held the Hornets to just two shot attempts in their first shutout of the season.

NFL

Callahan on Packers’ practice squad: One day after being released by Green Bay, Joe Callahan was back with the Packers on Sunday.

Green Bay signed the former Wesley College quarterback to its practice squad.

The Packers, who signed 10 players to their practice squad, kept two QBs on their 53-man roster.

Callahan is starting his second year on an NFL roster.

Also signed to a practice squad on Sunday was Newark High grad David Grinnage, a tight end with the Jaguars.

Bowling

Millsboro’s Hastings wins title: Mike Hastings won his second PBA50 Regional bowling title on Sunday.

Hastings, a 60-year-old retired school teacher from Millsboro, beat John Conroy of Mahopac, N.Y., 220-201, to capture the Strike Zone Open.

“It’s been awhile,” said Hastings, pointing out his first PBA title came in May, 2010, in Martinsville, Va.

Hastings was tied for 10th after Saturday’s 8-games of qualifyfing when he averaged 193.13

In Sunday’s top 12 match-play, Hastings eliminated two challengers when he scored 3-games-to-1 wins in the best-of-5 first two rounds.

In the one-game semifinal against Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y,, Hastings easily earned his way to the title game with a 216-140 decision.

Along with the title Hastings earned $1,500.
