In a showdown between two of the top-five field hockey teams in the country, No. 1 Connecticut came up with the game’s only goal in edging fifth-ranked Delaware, 1-0, in overtime at Rullo Stadium on Sunday.

The two teams held the 0-0 tie for nearly 82 minutes before Huskies All-American Charlotte Veitner put in the game-winner with 3:05 remaining in OT.

The loss marked the second straight in overtime for the Blue Hens (6-3) as Delaware fell to No. 20 Albany, 3-2, in extra minutes Friday evening.

“Even though we didn’t get what we wanted today, I shared with them that it was a very well-played game,” Delaware coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said about his players. “It showed us our character and our desire to get back at it. I think throughout the game we had gotten better.

“We didn’t finish a few of the opportunities earlier on that would have made the difference, but we have learned from it and I’m sure we’ll face a team like Connecticut again at the end of the season and at that time we should be better than we are today.”

The Hens were held scoreless for the first time since 2014, ending a stretch of 58 straight games with a goal. UConn outshot Delaware, 15-7, and held a 10-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Junior All-American Greta Nauck posted three shots for Delaware while freshman Lotte de Koning tallied two.

Shenandoah 4, Wesley 2: Junior Kasey Fry (Milford High) scored a goal in each half for the Wolverines (2-7) in the loss.

Makenzie McIntyre and Sidney Knott each recorded two saves in net for Wesley.

WOMEN, Delaware 1, Towson 0: The Blue Hens (4-5-2, 1-1 CAA) scored the lone goal in the 76th minute when Gabby Johnson buried a penalty kick.

The Hens were awarded the PK when Hannah Specht was tripped inside the Towson 18-yard box. It was Delaware’s first penalty kick of the season.

Delaware State 0, Mount St. Mary’s 0: The Hornets (0-9-1) played to the scoreless tie as goalie Leslie Fazio (Sussex Tech) made eight saves.

The Mount (3-6-1) outshot DelState by a 22-9 margin, including 8-2 in the pair of overtimes.

College football

Three Wolverines honored: Sophomore running back E.J. Lee was named the Offensive Player of the Week while two Wolverines won rookie awards from the New Jersey Athletic Conference on Sunday.

Lee ran for 128 yards and five touchdowns on just 13 carries in the Wolverines’ 66-0 football win over William Paterson.

Wesley freshman running back Gyair Sharper was named the NJAC’s Offensive Rookie of the week after running for 15 yards and a TD on four carries.

Also, Wolverine defensive lineman Shymere Vessels,a freshman from Woodbridge High, was named the league’s top defensive rookie after recording four tackles, including four solo stops, in the victory.

Local bowling

N.Y. pair win at Millsboro: The New York pair of John Conroy and Alex Cavagnaro won the PBA/PBA50 East Region Open Doubles at Millsboro Lanes on Sunday.

Conroy and Cavagnaro combined to shoot 436 in the final game to score a nine-pin win over Ray Edwards and Matt O’Grady. The two teams split the first two games of the best-of-three title round.

Conroy (Mahopac, N.Y.), outscored O’Grady, 258-250, while Cavagnaro (Massapqua, N.Y.) nipped Edwards, 178-177 in the title game.

In Saturday’s qualifying, hometown favorites Mike Hastings and Josh Schmehl earned the No. 1 seed into Sunday’s match play. After receiving a first-round bye, Hastings and Schmehl were eliminated by the eventual winners in a match that went three games, 2-1.

Hastings and Schmehl were the only Delaware entry to make it into match-play. Hasting was going after his third pro title, after winning a PBA50 event in Pottsville, Pa., earlier this month.
