Trailing by a run in the top of the sixth inning, Milton’s Little League World Series’ dreams were down to their last out on Tuesday.

But Timothy Hitchock’s clutch RBI single tied the game before Tyler Husbands’ three-run homerun in the seventh lifted Milton to a dramatic 5-2 victory over Maryland in the Major League baseball Mid-Atlantic Regional.

The dramatic win keeps the Delaware state champions alive in the six-team tournament being played in Bristol, Conn. Milton won’t play again until Thursday at 7 p.m. when it faces either New Jersey or Pennsylvania.

Milton (1-1) would still need to win three more games to become just the third Delaware squad to reach the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

On Tuesday, Milton was losing 2-1 with two outs in the sixth. Hitchcock, though, singled home teammate Brian Sponaugle, who had doubled two batters earlier.

In the seventh, Luke Crouch singled and Malikye Wells walked before Husbands hit his three-run homer to right field to give Milton its first lead since scoring a run in the top of the first. Pinch-runner Andrew Criswell and Wells both scored on the play.

Still, Maryland — from Hughesville — battled back in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs. However, reliever Hunter Rauch got a strikeout swinging to end the game.

Milton outhit Maryland, 8-4. Husbands (3 RBI, 1 run), Hitchcock (2 hits, 1 RBI) and Sponaugle (2 hits, 1 run) paced Milton’s offense while pitcher Chase Boyle allowed just one hit and three walks while striking out 10 in five shutout innings.

Junior League

New York 12, Camden-Wyoming 9: Camden-Wyoming’s run in the Eastern Regional came to an end with the loss on Tuesday.

The Delaware state champions went 2-2 in the tournament, played in Freehold, N.J.

Ryan Rigby had five strikeouts for Camden-Wyoming, which scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh before falling short.

Camden-Wyoming 7, New York 2: The Delaware state champions improved to 3-0 in the Eastern Regional with the victory on Tuesday in Dallas, Pa.

Camden-Wyoming is in first place in the Mid-Atlantic Division going into today’s pool-play finale against Pennsylvania at 3 p.m. Semifinals are slated for Thursday in the regional, which also includes a New England Division.

In Tuesday’s win, winning pitcher Peyton Shields struck out 12 while adding two hits, one RBI and a run scored at the plate. Camden-Wyoming was also led by Vanessa Gaines (2 hits, a homerun, 2 RBI, 2 runs), Ashlyn Schmidt (1 hit, 1 run), Kaitlyn Horton (1 hit, 2 RBI, 1 runs), Lauren Dickerson (1 run) and Chloe Donigan (1 run).

College football

Wesley picked second in NJAC: After earning the title of co-champions in its first year as an associate member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference, the Wesley College football team was selected to finish second in the NJAC preseason coaches’ poll on Tuesday.

Wesley was predicted to finish behind Salisbury, but received a league-high five first-place votes in the poll. Frostburg State finished third in the rankings with one first-place. Rowan received one first place vote and was selected fourth.

A year ago, the Wolverines earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament and posted playoff wins over Framingham State and Johns Hopkins to reach the national quarterfinals for the seventh consecutive season before falling to eventual national champion Mount Union.

The Wolverines returns a league-high nine all-conference players from a squad that went 8-1 in conference. That group includes senior running back Jamar Baynard, senior wide receiver James Okike, senior wide receiver/returner Bryce Shade, senior offensive lineman Austin Eagle, junior offensive lineman Matt Gono, junior linebacker Samer Manna, senior defensive back Andre Connally, sophomore wide receiver Alex Kemp and senior defensive lineman Roderick Caine.
