For the first time in its history, Milton can call itself the top Little League baseball team in the state.

The Sussex County league captured its first Major League baseball state crown with a commanding 16-4 victory over Brandywine at Newark National on Wednesday night.

In a winner-take-all-championship game, Milton won its third game in three days to earn a ticket to the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Bristol, Conn.

Milton is the first Sussex County squad to win the Major League state title since Lower Sussex in 2002.

After downing Brandywine, 17-3, on Tuesday to force a second game for the title, Milton never trailed after scoring three first-iining runs on Wednesday. Leading 9-4, Milton then put the finishing touches on the victory with seven runs in the sixth.

After losing to M.O.T., 8-2 on Saturday, Milton won its next three games by a combined 42-7.

Chase Boyle hit two homeruns, including a two-run shot that gave Milton an 8-3 lead in the fourth inning.

Canal 10, Rhode Island 7: Delaware state champion Canal rallied for the final five runs of the game to reach the Eastern Regional championship game on Wednesday.

Canal (4-1) will face New Jersey (3-0) today at noon in Bristol, Conn. for the right to go to the Major League World Series in Portland, Ore. New Jersey, from Robbinsville, beat Canal, 10-0, on Tuesday for the Delaware squad’s only loss in the tournament.

On Wednesday, Canal scored four runs in the fourth inning to overcome a 7-5 deficit. Canal outhit Rhode Island, 10-8.

College football

UD switches two starting times: The University of Delaware football program has announced that the starting times for home games against Colonial Athletic Association foes Stony Brook and Villanova this fall have been changed.

Both games have been moved to 1 p.m. kickoffs at Delaware Stadium.

The Oct. 22 matchup with first-time opponent Stony Brook was originally scheduled for 3:30 p.m. but has been moved ahead to a 1 p.m. start.

The regular-season finale Nov. 19 against  Villanova — the annual Battle of Blue matchup and the 50th meeting all-time between the foes — has also been moved to a 1 p.m. kickoff.

The Delaware-Villanova game time could altered once again if it is televised as part of the Comcast SportNet and American Sports Network package with the CAA. CSN and ASN will showcase the best matchups on Nov. 19 based on the conference standings.
