Juliana Kolakowski’s five goals helped Smyrna High earn a 15-5 win over Indian River High in a Henlopen Conference girls’ lacrosse contest on Wednesday.

The Eagles improved to 9-3 on the season. Kayley Pierce had a hat trick for Smyrna while Madeline Wilber scored twice and dished out two assists.

Taylor Brittingham also had a two-goal game. Jessica Bergold, Sierra Duman and Emma Mayew round out the Smyrna scoring.

Dover 14, Sussex Academy 5: Grace Gast scored five goals and Cydney Barnes added three in the Senator victory.

Riley McQuaide and Mira Prisco contributed a pair of goals each.

Cape Henlopen 21, Caesar Rodney 6: Evelyn Shoop paced the Vikings with a game-high five goals.

Lindsay Monigle and Chloe Schaeffer each recorded a hat trick for Cape. Sawyer Walker netted four goals for Caesar Rodney.

Boys’ lacrosse

Smyrna 17, Sussex Central 7: Jake Soroko and Jake Kaiser each netted five goals as the Eagles picked up the victory.

Brian Davis scored three times and added an assist for Smyrna.

Dover 17, Lake Forest 1: The Senators improved to 7-4 on the season after Wednesday’s win.

College softball

Delaware splits at Monmouth: Blue Hen freshman righthander Kat Morris tossed a four-hit shutout in the nightcap as the University of Delaware softball team split its final non-conference doubleheader of the season at Monmouth.

Monmouth (21-28) recorded an 8-6 comeback win during the opener, before Delaware (21-27) posted a 1-0 shutout in the nightcap. Morris, who improved to 2-6 on the year, fired her first career shutout as a Blue Hen by scattering just four hits and two walks while striking out a pair.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, as Mattie Nuccio led off with a single up the middle and one out later advanced to third when Anna Steinmetz reached on an error. Alyshia Dellatore then laced a single to rightfield, driving home Nuccio with the only run of the contest. Morris allowed a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth and a one-out double in the seventh, but worked out of trouble each time to seal the victory.

Men’s lacrosse

Multiple Hens honored: Delaware placed five student-athletes on the Colonial Athletic Association all-conference, all-rookie, and all-academic teams.

In addition to the recognition of the five Blue Hen players, the league coaches also honored Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw as the CAA Coach of the Year. Shillinglaw retired this season after leading the Blue Hens for the last 39 years and finishing as one of the winningest coaches in the history of the sport.

Shillinglaw concluded his legendary career with 334 victories (No. 4 among active NCAA Division I head coaches) and an NCAA record 653 games coached. He led Delaware to six NCAA Tournament appearances 16 conference titles, and was named league Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career.

Senior midfielder Will Hirschmann and sophomore longstick midfielder Austin Haynes each earned second team All-CAA honors while freshman goalkeeper Matt DeLuca and freshman attackman Charlie Kitchen earned spots on the CAA All-Rookie team. In addition, graduate student and midfielder Steve DeLargy was the Blue Hens’ representative on the CAA All-Academic Team.

College track and field

UD to host conference meet: The University of Delaware will play host to many of the top men and women track & field performers in the East this weekend when the Blue Hens welcome 10 teams for the Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.

The annual meet will get underway on Friday at 10 a.m. and run until early evening and then resume on Saturday at 10 a.m. Admission is free during both days of competition. Live results throughout the meet will be available online at www.bluehens.com.

Delaware is hosting the CAA Championships for the first time and is serving as host of a conference championship for the first time since the 1980’s. A total of 59 Blue Hen student-athletes will be competing for head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith.

Wesley’s Brown repeats honor: Wesley freshman Jasmine Brown was named the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Division III Rookie of the Week for the third consecutive week.

Brown collected three top-five finishes at the TCNJ Lions Invitational on Saturday. Brown recorded a pair of third-place finishes in the high jump (1.60 meters, 5-3) and the triple jump (11.26 meters, 36-11.5). Brown also placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 5.26 meters (17-3.25).
