Johan de jesus Cordoba netted a goal in each half as Indian River High blanked Sussex Central, 3-0, in the Henlopen Conference boys’ soccer championship game on Monday night.

Mikie Mochiam added the other goal for the Southern Division champion Indians (13-3), who led 2-0 at halftime.

IR, which beat the Golden Knights 1-0 during the regular season, was outshot 15-7. Goalie Kevin Calles Zamora made 10 saves.

The Indians are the top seed in the upcoming DIAA Division II state tournament and will play the winner of the Sussex Academy-Caravel on Saturday at Milford at 5 p.m.

Watson Dorsinvil and Ean Radke combined to make five saves for North champion Central. The Knights (13-3) are seeded fourth in the Division I state and will face No. 5 Caesar Rodney (12-3) on Saturday at Milford at 7 p.m.

Unified football

Smyrna is top seed in tourney: Smyrna High has earned the top seed in the DIAA Unified Football state tournament which starts on Wednesday.

The Eagles will host No. 8 Caesar Rodney at 6 p.m. in Wednesday’s quarterfinal round. Also on Wednesday, third-seeded Sefaord will host No. 6 William Penn 1t 3:30 p.m.

The semifinals are slated for Nov. 16 with the finals on Dec. 3 at Delaware Stadium. Unified football pairs up students with and without intellectual disabilities play on the same teams.

Special Olympics

Fall Festival at St. Andrews: More than 700 Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners (peers without a disability) are set to compete at the annual Special Olympics Delaware Fall Sports Festival on Nov. 11-12  at St. Andrew’s School in Middletown.

For the second straight year, the Fall Sports Festival is being held on the St. Andrew’s campus.

Preliminary competition in bocce begins Friday evening and then, on Saturday, competition continues in bocce along with round-robin tournaments in flag football, soccer and volleyball. A 5K and 1-mile run along with a Young Athletes (children ages 2–7) demonstration will also be held. More than 150 coaches have volunteered to train the athletes during the past two months with representation in each sport from every area in Delaware, and volleyball teams from Howard County, Maryland.

The Opening Ceremony is at 11 a.m. on Saturday inside Sipprelle Field House. Admission to the ceremony and all sports events is free and open to the public. For more information visit www.sode.org.

College volleyball

DelTech wins regional tourney: The Delaware Tech women’s volleyball team recently won the NJCAA Region 19 Division II championship in Scranton, Pa.

It is the Roadrunners’ third regional title in the past five years and fourth title overall. Delaware Tech claimed the title by defeating Harcum 3-1 (25-13, 25-23, 17-25, 25-22) in the finals and Lackawanna 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-8) in the semifinals match.

With the two victories, Delaware Tech is now 26-3 on the year. Outside hitters Marimar Rodriguez-Ramos and Mary O’Hanlon were named to the Region 19 Division II All-Region team.

Hens’ Bellinger honored: Delaware freshman outside hitter Maria Bellinger was named the Colonial Athletic Association Volleyball Rookie of the Week after leading the Blue Hens to a pair of home victories over Northeastern and Hofstra.

Bellinger led Delaware in kills during both matches, posting 37 during the weekend for a 4.11 average, and added 24 digs while recording a pair of double-doubles. Bellinger, who has appeared in all 27 matches while making 24 starts this year, currently leads the Blue Hens with 283 kills for a 2.77 average.

College cross country

Roadrunners win title: The Delaware Tech men’s cross country program won its first NJCAA Regional 19 championship while the women’s team finished second in the regional meet held recently.

As regional champions, the men’s team will travel to El Dorado, Kansas, to compete in the National Championship being held November 12.

At the regional, Mark Corrigan was the men’s overall champion, completing the 8K race in 27:26.1. In total, Delaware Tech placed five runners in the top 10, as Caleb Giles, 29:58.4 (4th place), Janssen Pacarro, 31:09 (7th), Damion Richardson-Tucker, 31:29.7 (8th), and Sam Freda, 32:22.4 (9th), joined Corrigan among the event’s top performers.

Taylor McKinney finished second overall to lead the Roadrunners’ women’s team, completing the 5K in 20:19.8. Miranda Warren (21:21.1) and Briana Bryfogle (22:40.9) also finished in the top ten, crossing the line in fifth and seventh place, respectively.

It is the second year in a row the women’s team has been runner-up at the regional.

College field hockey

Polytech grad honored: Polytech High grad Ali McKay, a freshman on the Bloomsburg field hockey team, was a third-team selection on the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference squad.

McKay finished tied for second on the team in scoring with six goals and two assists for 14 points. She appeared in all 19 games and earned 18 starts.

McKay scored her lone game-winning goal against Bellarmine on Sept. 10 and had two games where she scored two goals. She finished fourth on the team in both shots attempted (32) and shots on goal (19).

The Huskies finished with a 12-7 overall record and a 6-4 mark in the PSAC standings.

College bowling

Hornets place ninth in tourney: Delaware State finished ninth out of 17 teams at the weekend Sam Houston State Kat Klash Bowling Invitational.

The Hornets were 6-7 overall during the tournament, posting a 4-4 record in Baker games and a 2-3 mark in traditional contests.

Among the teams posting tournament wins over DSU were national preseason No. 1 Arkansas State (traditional), No. 3 Vanderbilt (traditional), No. 4 Sam Houston State (Baker) and No. 8 Stephen F. Austin (traditional).

The Hornets, preseason No. 10, earned victories over No. 19 Prairie View and No. 21 Tulane during the weekend tournament.

In the individual standings, Delaware State’s Elizabeth Burkholder was seventh among 114 competitors with a total pinfall of 1064 for a five-game average of 212.8. Burkholder topped the 200 mark in each of her first four games, including a high of 226. The weekend performance raised her season average to 207.8 in 10 games.

DSU’s Chelsey Merklinger was 12th in the individual competition with a total pinfall of 1029 (205.8). She rolled a season-best 246 vs. Texas Southern in her fourth game.

Delaware State’s Alexis Nauer was 26th in the competition with a 195.6 average (978 total pinfall), while Amber MacLeod was 29th at 193.3 (778 total pinfall). MacLeod rolled a season-high 258 in the opening match to tie for the third-best single game in the tournament.
