Delaware State junior Tara Tursellino has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.

She totalled a season-high seven strikeouts, along with allowing four hits, a walk and no earned runs in five innings in DSU’s 7-4 victory at Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday.

It marks the third time Tursellino has garnered the award, as she won it twice last season. Tursellino is a two-time second-team All-MEAC selection, in addition to earning MEAC Rookie of the Year honors in 2014.

Numbers-wise she is DSU’s all-time leader in saves (9), while sitting second for most innings pitched (371.1) and third in wins (33) with 200-plus strikeouts (245).

Wesley’s Marcano honored: Wesley College junior Nina Marcano was named the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week in softball.

The Townsend native blasted a pair of three-run home runs in a doubleheader sweep of Keystone, including a walk-off blast in game two. She finished the week with four hits, seven RBI, three runs scored and a 2.333 slugging percentage.

Marcano leads the Wolverines in RBI (16), home runs (2), and extra-base hits (7).

College baseball

Hens’ Patten wins award: Delaware freshman first baseman Nick Patten was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week in baseball.

Patten hit .471 (8-for-17) with four doubles, a homer, eight runs scored and six RBI as the Blue Hens won four of their five games last week. He batted safely in all five games, increasing his hit streak to six, and added three steals during the week.

Patten has appeared in 19 games while starting 18, all at first base. He is batting .328 and is tied for the team lead with 21 runs scored. He currently ranks second on the Hens with seven doubles, and is tied for second with 12 RBI and five steals.

Patten is the fourth consecutive UD freshman to earn CAA Rookie of the Week honors, along with Adam Rapp, Kevin Mohollen, and Kyle Baker.

College lacrosse

UD’s Wein honored by CAA: The Colonial Athletic Association recognized Delaware senior Erin Wein as its Defensive Player of the Week in women’s lacrosse.

The defender Delaware (8-2) this week with eight caused turnovers and five groundballs as the Hens went 1-1. Wein currently leads the CAA and is sixth in the NCAA Division I rankings with 2.7 caused turnovers per game for at total of 27 through 10 contests played.

UD’s career record holder, Wein has registered 114 caused turnovers all-time in addition to 108 groundballs.

College field hockey

Hens earn academic award: The Delaware field hockey team was acknowledged Monday by the NFHCA as a ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award recipient.

Delaware earned the recognition for the fifth straight season under head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof and his staff. The award honors programs that have achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the first semester of the 2015-16 academic year.

College golf

Wolverines seventh in tourney: The Wesley College men’s golf team earned a seventh-place finish at the Revolutionary Collegiate Classic on Saturday, shooting a combined 331 at the Patriots Glen National Golf Club in Elkton, Md.

Dylan Chessher (Caesar Rodney) led the charge, carding a 77 on the par-72 course to finish just four strokes off the leader for sixth place. Tyler Speilberger shot an 81 for an 18th-place finish.

Ricky Mulloy, Matt Maskell, and Mike Piccirillo rounded out the Wesley top five, shooting an 85, 88, and 89 respectively.

College track & field

Hornets win twice at VCU: The Delaware State track & field program opened its outdoor season over the weekend on a high note in the VCU Ram Invite.

Charles Wulff-Cochrane and Elijah Agwu both brought home crowns.

Wulff-Cochrane clocked a 53.91, ahead of two VCU runners, to win the 400-meter hurdles, while Agwu finished on top in the discus event with a throw of 46.96 meters.

The men’s showing for the Hornets also included Emanuel Hitch registering a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.09, while Roderick Brown finished third (6.70m) in the long jump.

The Hornet women were led by Roselyn Oroyemi finishing third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.34.

Special Olympics

Basketball tourney set for April: Special Olympics Delaware’s annual State Basketball Team Tournament tips off at 11 a.m. on April 2 at the Carpenter Center in Newark and play continues through April 3.

Thirty-one teams from across the state made up of more than 420 Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners (peers without disabilities) are scheduled to compete in round-robin tournaments over the two days. In addition to the full-court team tournament, the event includes a skills competition, Young Athletes (children ages 2-7) demonstration, and Olympic Village activities.

A gala opening ceremony takes place Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with WDEL’s Don Voltz serving as emcee. The event is free and open to the public. For more information visit www.sode.org.​
