Darnel Maisonet’s infield single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning drove in the winning run in Delaware State’s 10-9 victory over Coppin State in a MEAC baseball contest at Soldier Field on Sunday.

The Hornets (9-5 MEAC, 9-26 overall) swept the three-game series against the Eagles (6-9, 9-26).

With the game tied 9-9 in the ninth, pinch-hitter Niko Cribb singled to lead off the inning. Pinch-runner Rich Rountree moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sam Barber and took third on a wild pitch.

After a pair of walks loaded the bases with two outs, Maisonet followed with a line drive that struck the knee of pitcher Andrew O’Dwyer. The ball rolled to the right side of the infield, allowing Rountree to cross the plate with the winning run.

The Hornets blew a six-run lead before bouncing back to win the contest. The Eagles outhit the Hornets 12-6. Maisonet and Austin Bentley had two hits each for DSU.

Caesar Rodney High grad Travis Dill (1-1), DSU’s fourth pitcher of the game, threw two scoreless innings to earn the win.

Wolverines split in finale: Wesley rode the arm of Eric Willey (Woodbridge) to an 8-0 victory over Christopher Newport before falling 5-4 in a CAC twinbill on Saturday.

The Wolverines (11-7 CAC, 19-15 overall) earned the fourth seed in the CAC tournament and will play at Salisbury on Tuesday in the first round. The rest of the tourney will be played at top-seed Frostburg State.

Willey scattered eight hits in a complete-game shutout performance, striking out six. Trevor Mears (Sussex Central), Chris Seibert, and Mike Calvarese combined for nine hits, five runs and six RBI.

In the nightcap, Cody Dmiterchik (Cape Henlopen) provided a two-run double while Joseph Hummel and Calvarese each driving in one.

Northeastern 14, Delaware 0: The Hens (4-8 CAA, 21-14 overall) were limited to just three hits as the Huskies completed a three-game sweep.

Northeastern banged out 18 hits, including two home runs, three doubles, and three triples. The Hens were shut out at home for the first time in 55 games since a 9-0 blanking at the hands of William & Mary on March 16, 2013.

College softball

Hornets sweep Morgan: Delaware State registered a third consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series sweep, this time defeating Morgan State, 9-1, 11-2 and 8-0 over the weekend.

The Hornets (13-2 MEAC, 20-16 overall) remained in the driver’s seat for their third straight MEAC North division title, maintaining a two-game lead over Norfolk State (8-4 MEAC).

Delaware 10, Hofstra 6: The Blue Hens trailed Hofstra by five runs heading into the bottom of the fifth inning but rallied for 10 runs during its final two at-bats.

Delaware (8-4 CAA, 26-14 overall) moved into sole possession of second place in the conference standings. The Hens took two out of three from the Pride, winning a season series from Hofstra for the first time since 2006

Wesley loses two: Wesley dropped a pair of gamesto Christopher Newport, 8-1 and 10-2, on Saturday.

Nina Marcano finished with three hits, a run scored and an RBI while Ashley Royer registered two hits including a two-run home run in game two for the Wolverines (5-9 CAC, 12-16 overall).

College lacrosse

WOMEN, Delaware 14, Hofstra 13, OT: The Blue Hens rebounded from a seven-goal deficit to edge the Pride in overtime.

Down 7-0 within the first 21 minutes, the Hens scored four straight goals to go into halftime down 7-4. Delaware gradually fought back into it in the second half before goals from senior Shannon Hawley and junior Coley Ricci brought UD within one at 13-12 with 51 seconds remaining.

Hawley tied the game with just 12 seconds on the clock to give the Hens their third overtime appearance in the last five games. Junior Jamie Schwartz, the team’s leading goal scorer, notched the game-winner just over a minute into the extra period to make the comeback complete.

Hawley, who reached the 100-goal mark for her career, and Ricci led the Hens with four goals apiece. Delaware (1-3 CAA, 9-6) snapped a five-game losing streak.

Wesley 16, Southern Virginia 7: The Wolverines (3-12) finished their season on a high note Saturday.

Brianna Bacon scored a team-high four goals while Maddison Cypher (1 assist). Rodneisha Scott finished with a goal and two assists for Wesley. Alexis Galloway, Allison Perugini, and Paige Brehm each scored two apiece while Bailey Olds and Fallon Fore each netted one.

Goalie Savannah Clough made 12 saves.

College golf

Hens sweep CAA titles: The Delaware women’s golf team captured its first Colonial Athletic Association championship while Blue Hen senior Andi Slane successfully defended her individual title on Sunday as the league tournament concluded.

The Hens, in just the fifth year of the program, carded the lowest team round on Sunday with a 306, finishing first out of the eight league teams with a 927 total.

Meanwhile Slane, who won last year’s conference championship by eight strokes, became the first women’s golfer in CAA history to earn back-to-back titles by recording a two over par 77-71-70-218 on the par 72, 6,066-yard Reserve Club course. She is just the second CAA women’s golfer to win multiple conference titles, along with Georgia State’s Charlotte Lorentzen in 2010 and 2012.

The Hens advance to the NCAA Regionals on May 5-7 at a site TBA.

Wolverines fifth in CAC: The Wesley College men’s golf team placed fifth at the Capital Athletic Conference championships, carding a 1,066 team total for the three-day event.

Dylan Chessher (Caesar Rodney) earned Wesley’s top finish, coming in at 17th overall.

Lacrosse

BOYS, Caesar Rodney 15, St. Mark’s 1: Luke Rankin and Jacob Pangle collected three goals and two assists each as the Riders (6-2) won their fourth-straight game on Saturday night.

The contest was part of the Dave Reynolds Lacrosse Festival played at Wesley’s Miller Stadium.

Tyler Gross made five saves for CR, which outshot the Spartans, 34-12. Nine Riders tallied one goal each.
