Delaware State took out its frustrations on Summit, cracking the win column for the first time this season with a wire-to-wire 93-44 victory in men’s basketball at Memorial Hall on Monday evening.

The Hornets (1-13) were playing at home for the first time since Nov. 21. The NCAA Division III Defenders fell to 1-10.

The 49-point win was DSU’s largest since a 107-48 victory over Cairn during the 2013-14 season.

DeAndre Haywood led three Delaware State players in double-figures with 18 points. Aric Dickerson came off the bench in the second half to score 17 points, his high as a Hornet. Dickerson also knocked down a career-best four three-point field goals.

Dana Raysor added 15 points for the Hornets, highlighted by four three-pointers for the second straight game.

Raysor scored 11 points, highlighted by three three-pointers, and Haywood added six points to help propel the Hornets to a 21-4 lead eight minutes into the contest.

DSU opened up a 28-6 advantage on a lay-up and free throw by Haywood with 9:41 left in the first half.

The Hornets were ahead 44-21 at the break.

Delaware State outscored Summit 20-5 to start the second half, and opened up a 64-26 lead on a three-pointer by Devin Morgan with 13:20 left to play.

The Hornets stretched their lead to 77-31 on a Dickerson’s second three-point basket at the 8:29 mark of the second half.

DSU was 18-for-35 from the field (51.4%), including six-of-11 on three-point shots (54.5 percent) in the second half.

The Hornets outscored the Defenders 49-23 in the final 20 minutes.

Delaware State forced Summit into 18-of-65 shooting from the field in the game (27.7 percent).

Joseph Lewis and Mrdjan Gasevic led the Hornets with seven rebounds each.

DSU returns to action at Morgan State on Saturday (Jan.  9) in the Hornets’ 2015-16 MEAC opener. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m., following the Delaware State/Morgan State women’s contest at Hill Fieldhouse in Baltimore, Md.

STINGERS: The Hornets nailed a season-high 12 three-point field goals in the contest, giving them 22 in the last two games … DSU outrebounded an opponent for the first time this season, notching 55 boards to 38 for Summit … the 55 rebounds tied for the most by the Hornets since the aforementioned victory over Cairn during the 2013-14 season … DSU’S Scott Sill tied his career-high with eight points … Haywood has led the Hornets, or tied for the team scoring high, in six games this season … thirteen of the 15 players who saw action for Delaware State scored in the contest … the Hornets outscored Summit 39-18 in the paint, 23-8 on second-chance points and 45-8 on points from the bench.

Special Olympics

Bowling events slated: Months of training culminate when nearly 500 Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners from across the state showcase their skills at the Special Olympics Delaware Bowling Tournaments on Jan. 9 in Dover and Milford.

Participants represent Special Olympics Delaware’s five area programs from across the state: Wilmington Wizards, Newark Dragons, MOT Tigers, Kent County Wild Kats and Sussex Riptide.

Events include singles, doubles, Unified doubles, bumper and ramp. Athletes and teams are placed in divisions based on 10-game averages. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to first- through third-place finishers and ribbons to fourth through sixth place.
