Behind a pair of pitching gems from Brandon Walter and Dover High grad Nick Spadafino, the University of Delaware baseball team swept a doubleheader from Penn State Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

In the opener, Walter, a sophomore left-hander, threw eight shutout innings, striking out a career-high 17 batters. Walter walked one and allowed just a one-out seventh inning single.

The Delaware native (Hodgson) retired the side in order in every inning but the seventh and struck out the side in the fifth and eighth innings. Walter struck out multiple batters in every inning but the first and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning.

Offensively, the Blue Hens (10-7) scored a run in the second on an RBI groundout from Diaz Nardo before adding five insurance runs in the seventh.

The seventh inning was highlighted by a pair of two-run doubles from Kevin Mohollen and designated hitter Doug Trimble.

In the second game Delaware received more great pitching as Spadafino pitched six shutout innings, allowing just a pair of singles in the fourth inning. The righty struck out five and walked just one batter.

“Spadafino is starting to come full-circle,” said UD coach Jim Sherman. “He’s fully figured out his release point, what all of his pitches need to do and how to make adjustments when things don’t completely work out. His growth and maturity are finally starting to shine. I’m really happy that the results are coming because he’s worked really hard.”

At the plate, Delaware scored unearned runs in the second and fifth innings to enjoy a 2-0 lead after five.

In the second, Trimble rocketed a ground ball toward Penn State (6-10) third baseman Christian Helsel, who after making a nice pick, threw the ball away.

The throwing error allowed Trimble to reach second base safely. After a wild pitch advanced him to third, first baseman Nick Patten reached first safely on an infield hit that scored Trimble.

In the fifth, Mohollen singled with two outs and stole second base. Blue Hens catcher Nick Tierno hit a sky-high fly ball toward centerfield that Nittany Lions centerfielder Jordan Bowersox dropped.

The play, which should have been the third and final out of the inning, allowed Mohollen to score the Blue Hens’ second run.

The Blue Hens added a run on a safety squeeze in the seventh before Trimble lined a two-run home run to right field in the eighth.

The Hens received three shutout innings from versatile lefty Matt Hornich to close the game, earning Hornich his first career save.

The Blue Hens are now 8-2 during this homestand and have won 10 out of their last 13 games.

College lacrosse

MEN, Delaware 12, St. Joseph’s 9: The Blue Hens needed a big effort against a stingy Saint Joseph’s defense in its non-league men’s lacrosse tussle with the Hawks Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium.

And the Blue Hens got just what they needed as sophomore Andrew Romagnoli and freshman Charlie Kitchen combined for eight goals to lead Delaware to the much-needed victory and down rival Saint Joseph’s for the first time since 2013.

Delaware (6-3) bounced back from a setback last Saturday to Binghamton and won for the fifth time in the last six games, surpassing the entire season win total from each of the last two seasons. Saint Joseph’s (3-5) lost its second straight game following a three-game win streak.

Romagnoli notched his sixth hat trick of the season with a season-high five goals and extended his point-scoring streak to 12 games, Kitchen scored three times, including a nifty over the shoulder goal off a rebound in the second quarter, Joe Eisele scored twice, Will Hirschmann dished out three assists for the second straight game and also scored a goal, and Trupert Ortlieb chipped in with a goal and two assists.

Delaware freshman goalkeeper Matt DeLuca was solid once again in the nets with 12 saves to earn the win and improve to 5-1 as a starter.

Frostburg State 11, Wesley 2: Josh Wassum gave Wesley the early 1-0 lead thirty seconds in the game but the Wolverines were unable to sustain the early momentum. Zach Farnell tallied the other Wesley goal on an assist in the fourth quarter from Joe Fingles. Nate Gemmato picked up three ground balls while Leo Kelly corralled two ground balls in the loss.

James Cella stopped eleven shots in net for the Wolverines.

WOMEN, Delaware 13, George Washington 2: Nine different players scored as the Blue Hens picked up another victory.

The Blue Hens (5-3), who posted a 9-4 victory over Bryant on Thursday, clamped down on the opposition once again as they shut out the Colonials 7-0 in the first half and limited George Washington (1-6) to just 10 total shots for the game.

The two goals allowed by UD marks the best effort by a Delaware team since defeating Lafayette 22-2 back on Feb. 17, 2015. Delaware’s six goals allowed in a two-game span is the best since 1997 when the Hens posted back-to-back wins of 14-3 over Drexel and 13-2 over West Chester.

Christine Long had three goals and added an assist, Sydney Rausa scored twice and dished out three assists, and Caroline Farley scored twice. Becky Gohsler, Jamie Schwartz, and Mia DeRuggiero each had a goal and an assist.

Frostburg State 24, Wesley 8: Ashley Luna and Brianna Bacon both tallied two goals for the Wolverines in the loss. Bacon also scooped up two ground balls.

Fallon Fore, Maddison Cypher, Paige Brehm and Naomi Pitts-Reynolds each notched a goal while Cypher added an assist. Fore controlled nine draws for the Wolverines.

Rodneisha Scott and Shelby Schirmer paced the Wolverine defense. Scott recorded a game-high seven ground balls and four caused turnovers. Schirmer registered 11 saves in goal.
