Delaware held Longwood scoreless over the final 5:16 while scoring the game’s last eight points as the Blue Hens held off the Lancers for a 65-57 men’s basketball victory on Wednesday afternoon at UNCG’s Fleming Gymnasium.

Derrick Woods snapped a 57-57 tie and put Delaware (4-2) back in front for good with a putback, while Ryan Daly added two free throws at the 2:42 mark to make it a four-point game.

Daly hit two more from the line with 26 seconds to play, before Anthony Mosley added two of his own with 11 seconds on the clock to close the scoring.

Meanwhile, Longwood (0-5) missed their final eight shots from the field as Delaware pulled away for the win. The Hens were playing theirb third game in three days at the North carolina tournament.

“We really battled defensively down the stretch,” said Delaware coach Martin Ingelsby. “We changed from man to zone, and it took them out of their rhythm at the end of the game.

“We struggled offensively, but I’m proud of the way we hit our free throws. Our guys were exhausted down the stretch, but overall it was a really good team effort and I’m happy to get out of here with a win and move to 4-2.”

Blue Hen freshman guard Ryan Allen scored a season-high 19 points and added five rebounds for UD, while Daly added 16 points and three assists. Woods narrowly missed his second consecutive double-double with 11 points and nine boards, while Mosley contributed seven points and three assists.

“Ryan (Allen) brings a lot of firepower off the bench for us,” said Ingelsby. “He makes tough shots, and got us out of an early hole. He’s continuing to learn how to be cohesive with our starters.”

Delaware trailed 10-3 in the opening three minutes, but pulled even at 13-13 on a Kevin Anderson layup at the 11:10 mark. The Blue Hens then hit six straight shots from the field, including back-to-back threes by Allen, to surge in front 25-20 with 8:19 on the clock.

Delaware led by as many as eight points during the opening half, before a free throw by Mosley in the final minute gave the Blue Hens a 38-31 lead at the break.

UD used a seven-point run to go up a game-best 13 points at 49-36 with 13:07 left on Mosley layup, but Longwood answered with nine straight points to pull within four. Layups by Ashe and Glover brought the Lancers even at 57-57 with 5:16 to play, but the Blue Hens held Longwood scoreless the rest of the way.

Eric Carter missed his second straight game with an ankle injury while Anderson sat out the second half with a migraine headache.

The Blue Hens shot 60.7 percent in the first half but just 28 percent in the second.

Delaware finished 14 of 17 from the foul line, while Daly hit all eight of his attempts.

College athletics

Five DelTech athletes honored: Delaware Technical Community College had five athletes from fall sports receive All-Region honors from the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XIX.

From the cross country team, freshmen Sean Saxton (Dover High), Dyce Bailey (Polytech), and sophomore Katelyn Jensen (Indian River) were named All-Region based on their individual efforts at the NJCAA Region XIX Cross Country Championship Meet. Saxton finished the men’s 8K race in second place with a time of 28:22, while Bailey finished fourth in a time of 29:46. Jensen finished the women’s 5K race in seventh place with a time of 22:45.

From the DelTech volleyball team, sophomores Hayley Hudson and MaryBeth O’Hanlon (Appoquinimink) earned All-Region honors due to their outstanding play in the NJCAA Region XIX Women’s Volleyball Tournament. Hudson and O’Hanlon led Delaware Tech to a runner-up finish in the tournament and a berth in the district tournament.
