Anna Steinmetz hit a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning to give Delaware a 5-4 victory over Winthrop in the UNC-Greensboro Spartan Classic softball tournament on Saturday.

The Blue Hens then rallied from a five-run deficit to down Campbell, 9-7, as they concluded their two-stay in the tourney with a pair of comeback wins.

Trailing 4-0 against Winthrop, Delaware rallied in the top of the seventh with Mariah Kondravy drawing a walk to force home the Hens’ first run. Steinmetz then blasted a grand slam over the fence in leftcenter to put Delaware in front.

Winning pitcher Jordan Cargile (3-7) fired 1.2 innings of scoreless relief while Leana Gearhart, Giovanna Kolofer and Steinmetz all finished with a pair of hits.

Against Campbell, the Hens loaded the bases in the fourth before Davis belted a grand slam to put Delaware on top, 6-4. Delaware added two more runs in the fifth as Steinmetz hit a solo home run and Neal singled home Steiner to increase the margin to four.

Gearhart stole a base in each game and has tied the school record of 66 steals set by Kim Griffin from 1989-92. Steinmetz now has 20 career homers, tying her for second place in UD history along with Kondravy.

DSU drops two: Delaware State was unable to do much offensively in losses to Ohio State and nationally ranked Georgia at the Central Florida Wilson/DiMarini Tournament.

The Hornets fell to Ohio State 7-0 in their first game and blanked by No. 16 Georgia 11-0.

Ohio State starter Shelby McCombs allowed just one hit and struck out six in five innings to earn the win for the Buckeyes. DSU’s only hit in the game was a one-out single by Mika Lumsden in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Hornets managed four hits off two Georgia pitchers, singles by Lumsden, Dani Velez, Desiree Moreno and Kayleigh Berry. Lumsden was a combined 2-for-4 in the two games to raise her average to a team-high .333.

College lacrosse

MEN, Binghamton 13, Delaware 9: The Blue Hens had their four-game winning streak snapped as Binghamton converted four man-up goals and committed just six turnovers.

The Hens (5-3), whose winning streak was its longest since 2010, fell behind in the third quarter but battled back and cut the lead to 8-7 heading into the final stanza. The Bearcats (4-1), who won their second straight, promptly scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter to take control and move on to the win.

Delaware senior Trupert Ortlieb notched his third hat trick of the season while freshman Charlie Kitchen scored twice and dished out an assist, Joe Eisele added two scores, and Will Hirschmann netted one goal and assisted on three others.

Richard Stockton 16, Wesley 5: Five different Wolverines tallied a goal in the loss.

Leo Kelly, Joe Fingles, Josh Wassum, Zach Farnell and Nick Bruhn each scored for the Wolverines (4-3).

Alex Collins paced the defense with six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Bruhn added two caused turnovers. Goalie James Cella saved 20 shots for to tie a season-high.

WOMEN, Virginia Tech 15, Delaware 7: The Hokies jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.

Freshmen Mia DeRuggiero and Sydney Rausa led Delaware with three points (2 goals, 1 assist) apiece. Junior Megan Santoleri added two goals of her own in the loss.

Turnovers and fouls plagued the Hens (3-3) all afternoon as Delaware finished the day with 24 total turnovers and 36 fouls.
