Joey Haass broke a tie with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to give Fox Post-2 a 4-1 victory in the opening round of the American Legion baseball state tournament on Saturday afternoon over the Post-10 Generals.
Jake Williams tossed seven innings of one-run ball to earn the win for the Dover-area squad and Sean Hanhauser pitched the last two innings to record the save.
Kendall Small had a pair of hits for Fox Post-2, including a RBI-triple in the first inning which scored Miguel Rivera. Post-10 tied it at 1-1 in the top of the second and the scored stayed that way until Haass’ single in the seventh.
Adrian Hill added an insurance run in the eighth with a RBI-double.
Fox Post-2 will play Stahl Post-30 in the second round today at Wilson Field in Newcastle (12:30 p.m.).
Post-25 Middletown 12, Post-3 Milford 2: Post-25 scored a combined six runs in the first and second innings before scoring six more in the bottom of the fourth.
Recent Smyrna High grads Jared Gillis and Ryan Seymour paced the Middletown-Smyrna-area squad with each scoring twice and Gillis driving in a pair of runs. Shawn Dulin went 2-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI.
Bryan Widdowson and Michael Melvin each scored a run for Post-3 Milford. Widdowson and Jacob Rogers each had a hit for Post-3.
College golf
UD men set schedule: The University of Delaware men’s golf team will compete in five tournaments during the 2016 fall season, 16th-year head coach Mike Keogh announced.
The Blue Hens will open their campaign on Sept. 3-4 at the Colgate Invitational at Seven Oaks Country Club in Hamilton, N.Y., before again competing in the Navy Fall Classic at the Naval Academy Course in Annapolis, Md. on Sept. 18-19.
The Blue Hens will travel north for the Binghamton Fall Invitational at the Links at Hiawatha Landing Golf Club in Apalachin, N.Y. on Oct. 2-3, and following a week off, will participate in the Phoenix Invitational hosted by Elon University at Alamance Country Club in Burlington, N.C. on Oct. 17-18. The Blue Hens again wrap up their fall slate at the Old Dominion/Outer Banks Invitational at Kilmarlic Golf Course in Powells Point, N.C. on Oct. 23-25.
The Blue Hens return five of their top six golfers from the 2015-16 squad, when the team averaged 76.15 shots per round and won the Binghamton Fall Invitational team title. Rising junior Kieran Purcell, who was the only UD player to appear in all 12 tournaments a year ago, ranked second on the team with a 75.45 average round and was the Blue Hens’ top finisher at the CAA Championship.
