Polytech High scored five runs in the fifth inning to take control of a 6-0 Henlopen Conference victory over Sussex Tech in a North baseball matchup on Friday afternoon.

Winning pitcher Louis Whitaker struck out eight in five innings for Polytech (7-3 in conference, 10-4 overall), which scored its first run in the third.

Brent Buckson had two of the Panthers’ seven hits while Brendan Davis and Joey Haas had two RBI each.

Matt Warrington had nine strikeouts in a complete game for the Ravens (7-4, 9-6).

Cape Henlopen 4, Indian River 3: Zach Savage’s two-run double tied the game as the Vikings rallied for all four of their runs in the bottom of the sixth.

David Erickson (2-for-3) scored the winning run and also pitched the seventh to take the win.

Zack Gelof pitched the first six innings for Cape while Noah Piper tripled.

Jacob Anderson had a hit and an RBI for the Indians, who scored one run in the top of the seventh before falling short. Ulises Barrientos pitched five shutout innings for IR.

Caesar Rodney 7, Lake Forest 6: Sam Ervin drove in the tying run before scoring the winning run as the Riders rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Jake Chandler (2-for-3) and Kyle Comegys both doubled with pitcher Noah DeAtley picking up the win.

Logan Reed had a hit and two RBI for the Spartans, who took a 6-5 lead with four runs in the sixth.

St. Mark’s 6, Woodbridge 3: The Raiders scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh before falling short.

Gabe Wescott had an RBI single for Woodbridge.

McKean 8, Delmarva Christian 5: Matthew Murphy had two hits for the Royals in their loss.

Softball

Lake Forest 4, Caesar Rodney 3: The Spartans scored three runs in the third inning before holding off the Riders.

The victory was the ninth in a row for the Spartans (9-1 in conference, 13-2 overall).

Kerrigan Simpson and Mya Maddox both had mutiple hits for Lake Forest while pitcher Katie Stahre pitched a seven-hitter to take the win.

The Spartans led 4-1 before the Riders scored single runs in both the fifth and sixth. Stephanie Horne and Alexxys Harris both tripled for CR.

Padua 15, Polytech 4: The Pandas took control with 10 runs in the first inning.

Hayley DiCarlantonio had two hits for the Panthers with Hailey Wich adding a two-run double.

St. Mark’s 15, Woodbridge 6: The Spartans scored eight first-inning runs en route to the victory.

Lacrosse

BOYS, Salesianum 10, Cape Henlopen 8: The Sals outscored the Vikings by one in both the first and fourth quarters to post the victory.

Erik-Stephane Stancofski (1 assist), Brock Maloomian (1 assist) and Luke D’Ambrogi (2 assists) all scored twice for Cape, which Brendan Kane made 14 saves.

Sallies outshot the Vikings, 29-22.

GIRLS, Dover 15, Indian River 4: Grace Gast collected five goals and two assists as the Senators (11-4) finished with the best regular-season record in program history.

Dover, which led 8-2 at halftime, also got three goals apiece from Mira Prisco and Cydney Barnes and two from Riley McQuaide. Britney Miller made five saves as the Senators outshot IR, 29-12.

Alexis Haden netted all four goals for the Indians with Olivia Lease making 11 saves.

Padua 13, Smyrna 12: Juliana Kolakowski netted three goals for the Eagles, who led by two at halftime.

Julie Snow, Jessica Bergold and Sierra Duman all scored twice for Smyrna while Katelynn Porter made 15 saves.

Girls’ soccer

Caravel 2, Caesar Rodney 0: The Buccaneers scored in the first two minutes of the contest before going on to the nonconference win.

Marianna Nuzzo made nine saves for CR, which held advantages of 13-11 in shots and 6-4 in corner kicks.

The Buccaneers’ Sydney Keld made 13 saves to earn the shutout.

Indian River 9, Dover 0: Madison Hogsten (1 assist) tallied four goals to pace the Indians.

Five other players scored one goal apiece for IR, which finished with advantages of 16-1 in shots and 2-0 in corner kicks.

Brittney Rosello made six saves for the Senators.

Middletown 6, Smyrna 0: Alyssa Poarch netted four goals to lead the Cavaliers.

Woodbridge 5, Seaford 0: The Raiders posted a Henlopen South win.

Tennis

Henlopen tourney postponed: The final day of the Henlopen Conference tennis tournament, scheduled for today, was postponed because of today’s expected wet weather.

The tourney is now slated to conclude on Monday with boys’ and girls’ semifinals and finals at Sea Colony in Bethany.

College baseball

Hens clinch playoff spot: Delaware swept a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader from Towson, 7-5, 11-1 on Friday to clinch a spot in the CAA Tournament.

The Blue Hens (27-20, 12-8 CAA) missed the tourney last year for the first time in four seasons.

In the opener, the Hens received six strong innings from Dover High grad Nick Spadafino (5-3), who allowed just two hits and one earned run over six innings. The junior is tied with James Meeker for the team lead in wins.

Delaware got solo home runs from Calvin Scott (3-for-4) and Nick Patten.

Hornets earn split: Jaylen Zielecki singled in the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Delaware State a 5-4 come-from-behind win over St. Bonaventure.

The Bonnies blanked the Hornets, 8-0, in the first game of the nonconference doubleheader.

Trailing 4-2 in the seventh inning of the nightcap, Ciaran Devenney’s two-run single tied the contest.

Todd Henry was 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Kwestin Smith had a hit and scored three times in the nightcap for the Hornets.

College track & field

Hillman third at ECACs: Polytech High grad Sarah Hillman placed third in the discus at the Eastern College Athletic Conference  Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday evening.

Hillman, a junior at Delaware, registered a toss of 160-feet, 1-inch to earn All-East honors for the second straight year. She placed 11th in the event as a freshman in before placing second last year.

College softball

DSU ousted from MEAC tourney: For the second time in two days, Delaware State starting pitcher Hannah Shields shut out North Carolina A&T for more than seven innings before losing.

This time, the Aggies’ 3-0, eight-inning win over the Hornets eliminated DSU from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament.

DelState beat Hampton, 3-1, earlier in the day to stay alive in the double-elimination tourney being played in Ormond Beach, Fla. The Hornets end the season at 19-29.
