Roundup: Erickson strikes out 10 as Cape blanks Hillers in baseball tourney

David Erickson allowed only one hit and struck out 10 in five innings as the eighth-seeded Cape Henlopen Vikings blanked the No. 9 Hillers 10-0 in the first round of the DIAA baseball state tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Cape Henlopen (13-6) advances to Tuesday’s state quarterfinals. The Vikings will meet top seed Conrad at Frawley Stadium (4 p.m.).

Already leading 2-0, Cape broke open the contest with a six-run third inning. Austin Elliott (triple, double) drove in four of the Vikings’ runs while Connor Thompson went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

Tommy Heffernan drove in a pair of runs to end the game in the bottom of the sixth. He also pitched the top of the sixth to complete a two-hitter.

Salesianum 3, Milford 0: Eugene Holler allowed only one hit in six innings as the fifth-seeded Sals blanked the No. 12 Buccaneers.

Abraham Mow and James Kucharzuck had the only two hits for Milford (12-7) while freshman Chad Reichhold pitched a complete-game six-hitter.

St. Elizabeth 6, Sussex Tech 3: The 18th-seeded Ravens were ousted by the No. 15 Vikings in a first-round game.

Boys’ lacrosse

Cape Henlopen 11, Archmere 9: The Vikings won the quarterfinal matchup to earn a semifinal date against top seed Wilmington Friends this Wednesday.

The site and time for the semifinals are still to be determined.

Gregory Boyce and Erik-Stephane Stancofski each recorded a hat-trick for Cape Henlopen. Brock Maloomian added a pair of goals for the Vikings.

Cape took control of the matchup with a 5-1 third quarter.

Softball

Delmar 6, Delaware Military 2: The ninth-seeded Wildcats earned a berth in the state title game with the semifinal victory.

Avery Wheatley went 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs to pace the Delmar offense.

Delmar has never won a softball state championship. The Wildcats will meet Milford for the title on Tuesday at Roxana Little League complex (7 p.m.).
