Smyrna High netted the first five goals of the game before going on to a 13-10 win over Indian River in boys’ lacrosse on Monday afternoon.

Jake Kasier netted a team-high four goals with Jacob Soroko (1 assist) adding three as the Eagles (3-6) won for the third time in their last four games.

Jake Davis and Hunter McGuire both scored twice for Smyrna.

Delaware Military 10, Dover 9: The Seahawks scored in overtime to edge in the Senators.

Goalie Kyle Potter made 19 saves for Dover, which got three goals from Will Niebrzydowski (1 assist) and two apiece from Derek Hallock and Divine Watkins.

Lake Forest 20, Sussex Central 15: Carter Kenton (6 goals, 3 assists) and Kurt Moyer (5 goals, 2 assists) both sparked the Spartans’ victory.

Also leading the way for Lake Forest were Parker Sard (4 goals, 2 assists), Logan Johnson (3 goals, 1 assist) and Jarred Camper (2 goals, 7 assists).

Milford 11, Caravel 10: Milford outscored Caravel, 6-1, in the fourth quarter to rally for the victory.

Conor Christie scored five goals, Dallas Rhodes (1 assist) had three with Jonathan Gaglione (2 assists) scoring twice. Shane Gaglione made 20 saves.

St. Andrews 16, Sussex Tech 8: The Cardinals downed the Ravens in a nonconference matchup.

Worcester Prep 22, Delmarva Christian 2: Colin Anderson and Colby Apgar scored goals for the Royals.

GIRLS, Caravel 14, Polytech 11: Maddie McKay and Holly Rembold tallied three goals each for the Panthers in the setback.

Cecilia Carter (1 assist) and Cam Dennis both scored twice for Polytech, which trailed 8-7 at halftime. The Buccaneers outshot the Panthers, 24-22.

Smyrna 22, Newark 4: Nine players scored for the Eagles, led by Juliana Kolakowski (1 assist) with six goals and Sierra Duman with five.

Taylor Brittingham, Emma Mayhew, Julie Snow and Madeline Wilber scored twice for Smyrna, which led 15-2 at halftime.

Katelynn Porter made four saves as the Eagles outshot Newark, 26-3.

Girls’ soccer

Milford 2, Delmarva Christian 1: Melina Hudson’s overtime goal lifted the Buccaneers to the victory.

Daphne Leighty netted a first-half goal for Milford, which got seven saves from Hailey Morgan. The Bucs outshot the Royals, 16-8.

Maggie Burris’ second-half goal tied the contest for Delmarva Christian with Cailin McKeon making nine saves.

Cape Henlopen 2, Wilm. Christian 1: Lindsey Swontek’s goal in the 62nd minute snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the Vikings.

Brooke Hollingsworth scored in the first half for Cape, which held advantages of 22-2 in shots and 7-0 in corner kicks.

Baseball

Smyrna 13, Woodbridge 0: Garrett Casey, who struck out 10, and Max Lattomus combined to pitch a four-hitter for the Eagles.

Smyrna finished with 11 hits, scoring three runs in the first inning and six more in the seventh.

Softball

Milford 10, Cape Henlopen 2: Darby Brennan had three hits, including a pair of homeruns, with five RBI to power the Buccaneers.

Rajene Bowe (2 RBI) also had three hits with Genesis Chamberlayne adding two.

The Vikings got a two-run homer from Raegan Jackson.

Caesar Rodney 19, Seaford 0: The Riders picked up a Henlopen Conference win by blanking the Blue Jays.

Delmarva Christian 10, Salisbury Christian 0: Camryn Thompson threw a complete-game three-hitter to earn the shutout for the Royals.

Thompson (2 RBI, 2 runs) also went 3-for-4, Malaurie Noble had two hits and two RBI and Siera Jones drove in three runs.

College basketball

DSU men sign five: Delaware State men’s basketball coach Keith Walker announced that the Hornets have signed five recruits.

The list includes two junior college transfers and three freshmen. The class has three forwards, two of whom are also listed as centers, one point guard and one shooting guard.

Joining the Hornets next season is power forward Amiri Waddell (6-6, 235) of Charlotte, N.C. Waddell averaged 15.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game as a senior at Concord First Assembly Academy last season.

The Hornets have also inked former Brunswick Community College (N.C.) teammates Saleik Edwards and Daivon Gamble.

Edwards, a 6-3 shooting guard from Winterville, N.C., was Brunswick’s second-leading scorer at 13.9 points per game as a sophomore. He also averaged 4.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game last season.

Gamble, a 6-8 power forward/center from Charlotte, N.C., averaged 9.5 points and was Brunswick’s second-leading rebounder at 6.4.

Former Richmond, Va., high school star Ameer Bennett has also signed to join the Hornets next season. A 6-8, 200-pound forward, Bennett averaged 12 points and nine rebounds per game and earned Virginia Prep All-Conference honors as a senior at St. Christopher’s High.

Rounding out the list is Johquin “Pinky” Wiley, a former standout point guard at L.C. Bird High School in Chesterfield, Va.

College softball

Wilm. U.’s Burton, Slater honored: Caesar Rodney High grad Rosa’Lynn Burton, a freshman outfielder on the Wilmington University softball team, was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference’s Rookie of the Year.

Burton was also a CACC first-team selection while senior third baseman Kaitlyn Slater from Woodbridge earned second-team honors.

Burton led the team and finishing second in the CACC with a .474 batting average. She led the CACC with 52 runs while also leading the league with 82 hits and a single-season program record 39 stolen bases.

She also finished second in the CACC with six triples and 108 total bases. Her 82 hits this season are one away from tying the program’s single-season record.

Since an April 10 doubleheader at Bloomfield, Slater is hitting .448 with six homers and seven doubles with 30 RBI. She set a program record with nine homers, tied atop the CACC leaderboard.

She also finished the record season second in the CACC with 44 RBI while hitting a career-best .312. Her 95 assists from third are sixth most in the CACC.

College lacrosse

UD’s DeRuggeiero earns award: Delaware freshman Mia DeRuggiero was named the CAA Rookie of the Week.

DeRuggiero tied a season-high with three points in Delaware’s crucial 16-9 win at Drexel to secure a spot in the CAA Tournament. The midfielder finished with a goal and two assists.

Local auto racing

Brown wins ‘Brawl’: Jerremy Brown made the long tow from Stafford, Va. worth his while after sweeping the $2,500 Bike Brawl at U.S. 13 Dragway.

Brown first picked up $500 in winning the Pro Bike “Bad 8” and then went on to win the $2,000 final in Pro Bike.

In other action, Ben Parks of Salisbury, Md. picked up his second win of the young season in Top ET. David Hornsby of Delmar captured the final in Mod ET, Michael Jefferson of Parsonsburg, Md. won the final in Street and Vernon Kirkendown of Smyrna topped Hot Rod.

The Jr. Dragster Shootout was part of the day’s racing. Cole Foskey of Rhodesdale, Md. won in Jr. Dragster 1 and went on to meet Jr. 2 winner, Brett Holston of Felton. In the Shootout it was Holston over Foskey.

This Sunday will be “Double Up Day” for Mod ET plus Summit Super Series Points. Gates open at 10 a.m. with time runs at 11 a.m. and eliminations around 2:30 p.m.
