Roundup: Eagles earn basketball victory, Wesley's Cameron honored by CAC

Caleb Matthews scored 36 points, including the 1,000th of his career, to lead the Smyrna High boys’ basketball team to a 76-51 victory over Sussex Central High in Henlopen Conference Northern Division action on Monday night.

Matthews made seven threes on the night. Nalik Veasley contributed 17 points for the Eagles who remained unbeaten at 5-0.

Smyrna led 34-26 at halftime before outscoring the Golden Knights 26-7 in the third quarter.

Worcester Prep, Md. 51, Delmarva Christian 47: The Royals dropped an out of state game in overtime.

The game was tied 43-43 at the end of regulation before Worcester Prep went on an 8-4 run in overtime.

Girls’ basketball

Delmarva Christian 40, Worcester Prep 32: The Royals rallied from a first quarter deficit to earn the victory over an out of state opponent.

Men’s basketball

UD’s Anderson wins weekly award: Delaware freshman guard Kevin Anderson was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week.

Anderson scored 12 points and led the Blue Hens with a season-high 12 rebounds to post his first career double-double in Delaware’s 68-59 overtime win at Delaware State on Sunday. He added two steals and an assist in 41 minutes of action, and scored the first basket of the extra session that put the Blue Hens in front for good.

Anderson has appeared in and started all but one game this season, as he currently is tied for the team lead with 29 assists, ranks second with 12.9 points per game, and is fourth with 4.8 rebounds per contest. He leads all CAA freshmen in scoring, rebounding and assists.

Anderson is the second Blue Hen guard in three weeks to earn CAA Rookie of the Week honors, along with Ryan Allen on Dec. 4.Delmar

Anderson and the Blue Hens return home on Wednesday to host CSU Bakersfield at 7 p.m.

Wesley’s Cameron honored by CAC: Sophomore guard Brian Cameron was named the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Player of the Week for Dec. 18.

Cameron averaged 19.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 4.3 three-pointers per contest while shooting 65% (13-for-20) from beyond the arc in a 2-1 week for the Wolverines.

Cameron’s top performance came in a 105-94 win over Hood in the opening game of the Cregger Invitational, scoring 28 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor and 8-of-9 from three-point range while also adding six rebounds and two steals. He was named to the Cregger Invitational All-Tournament team for his efforts.

Cameron has scored in double figures in eight of Wesley’s nine games this season, and currently leads the CAC in scoring with 20.8 points per game.

It is the second CAC Player of the Week honor for the Wesley College men’s basketball team after Evan Anderson collected weekly honors on Nov. 27.

College football

Gono earns another All-American: Senior offensive tackle Matt Gono was recently named to the 2017 D3football.com All-America Third Team.

Last week, Gono was named First Team All-America by the American Football Coaches Association and the Associated Press. Gono is the first Wolverine to earn All-America status from at least three of the major Division III football media outlets since Joe Callahan in 2015.

It is Gono’s second D3football.com All-America honor of his career after being selected D3footall.com All-America Honorable Mention in 2015.

A Gagliardi Trophy semifinalist, Gono is a three-time D3Football.com All-East Region and New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) First Team honoree. He is also a two-time All-Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) All-Star.

Gono did not allow a sack all year and helped lead the Wolverines to the best offense in the NJAC with 5,295 total yards, including 2,477 yards on the ground. He paved the way for five All-NJAC Players, including NJAC Offensive Player of the Year, ECAC All-Star and D3football All-Region running back E.J. Lee.
