Jairus Lyles came off the bench to lead four players in double figures with 24 points in UMBC’s 90-68 men’s basketball win over Delaware State on Wednesday evening.

DeAndre Haywood scored 20 points for the second straight game to lead the Hornets (1-2) and raise his team-best average to 18 points per game.

DeVaughn Mallory (Polytech) had a season-high 13 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the field for DSU. He also pulled down a team-best seven rebounds. Mallory has made 11 of his 19 shots from the field this season to lead the Hornets with a .579 shooting percentage.

Kavon Waller added 11 points for Delaware State, highlighted by three three-point field goals. Waller is tops on the Hornets with nine three-pointers this season (9-for-16).

The score was tied at 11-11 before UMBC (3-0) took control of the game. The Retrievers outscored the Hornets 23-6 over the next five-and-a-half-minutes, and opened up a 34-17 lead on a layup by Lyles with 7:33 left in the first half.

UMBC led 43-23 at the break.

The Hornets scored 10 of the first 13 points in the second half, and pulled to within 46-33 on a three-pointer by Devin Morgan, but could get no closer the rest of the way.

Morgan had two three-pointers in the contest to extend his streak to 31 games with at least one three-pointer.

The Hornets will also play their next seven games on the road, beginning with a first-time visit to Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 21.

WOMEN, Lehigh 91, Delaware State 80: Hornet sophomore forward Najai Pollard was on pace for a school record-setting game as DSU took a double-digit lead on Wednesday.

But Pollard got in foul trouble as the Mountain Hawks rallied for the nonconference win.

Pollard finished with a career-high 38 points, tying for the third-best single-game total in team history. The school record for points in a game is 40 by Sabrina Leonard in 1983. Two other players have scored 39 points in a game for the Hornets.

Pollard also led all players with 12 rebounds to record her second double-double of the season and 10th in 32 collegiate games.

She was 14-for-17 from the field and 10-of-15 at the free throw line. Pollard set her previous career-high of 29 points last Friday against Detroit Mercy.

Behind 21 points by Pollard and 10 from Mikah Aldridge, the Hornets (0-3) opened up a 39-27 lead after capping off a 12-2 run with 3:34 left in the second quarter.

Lehigh (2-1), though, used a late first half rally to cut DSU’s lead to 41-36 at the break.

Delaware State led 46-42 when Pollard picked up her fourth foul with 6:46 remaining in the third quarter. She had 26 points at the time. But Lehigh was ahead 63-59 when Pllard returned to the game with 8:58 left to play.

Mikah Aldridge was the only other Delaware State player in double figures with a season-high 16 points.

Delaware 56, American 55, OT: After overcoming a four-point deficit with five minutes left in regulation, the Hens continued to clamp down on American in the extra session to pull out the hard-fought victory.

American (1-1) had the chance to win twice in the final seconds but Emily Kinneston missed a short jumper under duress with four seconds left and then misfired on a three-pointer from the top of the key as the buzzer sounded.

Sade Chatman led the Hens (2-0) with 17 points and her defense was even more important as she had a hand in the face of Kinneston on the final shot to help the Hens clinch the win.

Nicole Enabosi added 14 points and eight boards for the Hens while Hannah Jardine came off the bench to add 12 points. Enabosi’s jumper with 3:40 left in overtime put the Hens up for good.

College soccer

UD women’s coach steps down after 27 years: University of Delaware athletic director Chrissi Rawak announced Wednesday that longtime women’s soccer head coach Scott Grzenda has resigned.

Grzenda recently completed his 27th season at the post as the only head coach in Delaware women’s soccer history.

“I would like to thank Mary Ann Hitchens for hiring me all those years ago and all those who played for me and coached with me over the years,” said Grzenda. “I’ve loved them all.”

Grzenda compiled a career record of 241-215-45 (.526). Delaware finished as America East runners-up in 1994-96 and advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament semifinals twice, most recently in 2011.

He was named league coach of the year three times and coached eight all-region players, seven all-district academic selections, and 42 all-conference players.

The Blue Hens posted a record of 4-13-1 this past fall and placed eighth in the CAA standings with a mark of 3-5-1. Among the team’s wins was a 2-1 victory over eventual CAA champion and NCAA Tournament participant Northeastern. Delaware also tied CAA runner-up Drexel in the final game of the season.

A 1987 graduate of Delaware, Grzenda was a three-time All-East Coast Conference selection at midfield for the Blue Hens from 1984-86 and earned all-region honors during his playing days.
