The Dover High baseball team swept a doubleheader in Maryland on Saturday afternoon.

The Senators won their first game of the day with an 11-3 defeat of Easton (Md.). They then knocked off host Parkside (Md.) 13-1 in the nightcap.

In the Easton game, Hiram Davis pitched five strong innings to pick up the win while Dmitri Floyd was 4-for-4 with three RBI. Avery Tunnell went 2-for-4 and Tevin Thomas 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Against Parkside, Garrett Lawson and Jordan Hutchins combined for 11 strikeouts on the mound.  Both players also went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead the Senators offense. Triston Harris was 2-for-3 with two runs for Dover.

With the two wins, Dover improved to 3-0 on the season.

Milford 5, Tower Hill 4: William Kimmel opened up a tie game in the fifth with a two-out triple that cleared the bases to give Milford the lead.

Abraham Mow threw four solid innings adding two hits and one RBI  The Hillers mounted a comeback in the seventh, but Tommy Jordan was able to put down the threat earning his first save.

Aaron Thornley earned his second win in relief.

College baseball

Hornets sweep Coppin: Delaware State combined for 29 runs and 22 hits in a double-header sweep of MEAC North rival Coppin State at Joe Cannon Stadium on Saturday.

The Hornets won the first game 14-6 and completed the sweep with a 15-5 victory in the seven-inning nightcap. DSU took the series two-games-to-one to improve to 4-1 in division play this season.

In the opener, freshman third baseman Todd Henry was three-for-five with six runs batted in to lead the Hornets’ 13 hit attack.

Zaylen Zielecki smacked his first home run of the season, a two-run shot, and Evan Regez drove in two runs for DSU.

Delaware State led 8-6 before scoring six runs in the ninth to blow the game open.

Henry doubled in the game’s first run in the third inning and singled in two in the Hornets’ three-run fourth.

Delaware State was ahead 4-2 before tacking on three more runs in the seventh to open up a 7-2 lead. Henry drove in his fourth run of the game on a sac fly in the sixth.

Coppin State scored a run in the sixth and three in the seventh to cut the Hornets’ lead to 7-6.

The Hornets opened up an 8-6 lead when a run scored on a wild pitch in eighth.

Zielecki’s ninth-inning homer stretched the lead to 10-6. Henry knocked in his fifth and sixth runs of the game on a two-run single, while Regez and Austin Bentley also drove in the runs in the frame.

Zielecki, Chris Panzarella and Rich Rountree had two hits each in game one for the Hornets.

Delaware State starter Sean McGrath (1-3) picked up his first career win in the contest.

In the nightcap, Bentley was two-for-four with five RBI, highlighted by a grand slam, and Kwestin Smith knocked in four runs to lead the Hornets.

Delaware State opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Bentley drove in the first run on a one-out single.

After Coppin State scored a run on the bottom of the first, the Hornets added four in the second to open up a 6-1 lead. Adrian Hill singled in a run and Smith brought in a run on a groundout in the inning. Delaware State also scored second inning runs on a successful double steal and a passed ball.

The Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom of the second to cut the Hornets’ lead to 6-4.

DSU led 7-4 when Bentley smacked his first career grand slam in the fourth to give the Hornets a seven-run lead. Darnel Maisonet, Henry and Hill scored ahead of Bentley, who has jumped to the team RBI lead with 10 this season.

The Hornets added four runs in the fifth to take a 15-4 lead. Rountree hit his first career homer, a two-run shot, and Smith singled in two to account for the scoring in the inning.

Bentley is nine-for-22 (.409) with nine RBI in the Hornets’ five MEAC games this season.

College lacrosse

MEN, St. Mary’s 17, Wesley 9: The Wolverines were tied after the first quarter but fell to Capital Athletic Conference opponent St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

Jack Redefer led the Wolverines with four points, scoring two goals and dishing off a pair of assists while Sam Seibert scored a team-high three goals. Nate Gemmato scooped up a team-high six ground balls while Eric Bohns led the defense with three caused turnovers. Cody Ireland made 11 saves on the day but took the loss in net.

WOMEN, Towson 7, Delaware 6: The Blue Hens led, 6-5, with five minutes left in regulation before No. 20/17 Towson responded with two unanswered goals Saturday afternoon to defeat Delaware, 7-6, in overtime at Johnny Unitas Stadium in the Colonial Athletic Association lid-lifter.

Junior Jamie Schwartz led the Hens (8-3, 0-1 CAA) with three points on two goals and an assist while sophomore Megan Santoleri logged the first multi-goal game of her career with two tallies.

Senior Devyn Heidelbaugh and junior Mary Abram each collected two draws for Delaware.  Additionally, senior Erin Wein picked up three groundballs.

Sophomore Taylor Carpentier notched eight saves with seven goals allowed.

WOMEN, Alvernia 14, Wesley 4: Allison Perugini, Bailey Olds, Fallon Fore, and Brianna Bacon each scored for the Wolverines while Summer Stone and Olds each recorded an assist. Fore led the team with four ground balls while Francesca Benitez recorded a team-high two caused turnovers. Rodneisha Scott earned a pair of draw controls to lead the Wolverines. Savannah Clough made 13 saves, recording double-digit saves in her sixth gamee of the year but took the loss.

WOMEN, Wagner 20, Delaware State 3: Wagner scored 10 goals in the first nine minutes and never looked back in a 20-3 win over Delaware State in the Hornets’ 2016 home finale at Alumni Stadium.

Junior Iman Hassan scored each of Delaware State’s goals to give her a team-high 20 for the season.

Stephanie Peterson came off the bench to lead the Seahawks with four goals. Peterson also had an assists to tie for game-high honors with five points.

Shea Gegan tallied three scores and added two assists to also record five points.

A total of 11 players had at least one goal for the Hawks.

Wagner led 12-0 at the half.

College softball

Hens swept by Charleston: The College of Charleston softball team edged Delaware, 3-2 and 11-8 in eight innings, as the Cougars swept a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader from the Blue Hens Saturday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.

DSU picks up split: The Delaware State softball team (11-14, 4-2 MEAC) opened Saturday’s home doubleheader against the Norfolk State Spartans (9-14, 4-2 MEAC) with a dominating 8-0 five-inning victory, but fell in game two to complete the weekend, 7-5.

Despite dropping the series finale, which snapped a season-long four-game winning streak, the Hornets managed to take two out of three from the Spartans to win the series.

Wolverines take one from Mary Washington: The Wolverines earned a split with Capital Athletic Conference opponent Mary Washington in both teams’ CAC opener. Wesley earned a walk-off 5-4 victory in game one, but fell 11-1 in the second contest.

Kayla Fromal went 3-for-6 from the plate with three RBI in the two games combined while Ashley Royer batted 4-for-7 with four runs batted in. Royer also provided the game-winning hit and RBI in game one.

Lindsay Siok earned the complete-game win in the first contest, allowing four earned runs on eight hits while recording three strikeouts. In game two, Lily Engel got the starting nod allowing two earned runs (seven total) over 2.2 innings pitched. Sydney Botsch tossed 4.1 innings of relief allowing four runs and ringing up one Eagle.

College bowling

Hornets make MEAC final: Delaware State is one win away from the third MEAC bowling championship in team history. The top-seeded Hornets were undefeated in three best-of-seven Baker format matches to advance to the MEAC championship series today at AMF Lanes.

Delaware State will face No. 6 seed Norfolk State for the league championship in Sunday. The best-of-seven Baker series begins at noon. NSU defeated defending conference champ UMES to advance to the champiobnship round.

The championship match will be televised via tape-delay on ESPNU April 3 at 11 p.m.

This will be the first Baker competition between the Hornets and Norfolk State this season. Delaware State defeated the Spartans in Friday’s qualifying round 903-812 in a traditional contest.

DSU upended No. 8 Florida A&M 4-1, No. 5 Bethune-Cookman (4-2) and No. 4 Howard (4-2) to stand as the lone unbeaten team in the tournament. The Hornets were 5-0 in Friday’s qualifying round.
