Six teams from the Henlopen Conference will be playing postseason baseball as the DIAA announced the 16-team state tournament field on Thursday evening.

Dover High (14-4) has the best seed among downstate teams at No. 5 and will host 12th-seeded Delaware Military Academy (12-6) at 3 p.m. in Saturday’s opening round.

No. 7 Sussex Tech (14-4) will host 10th-seed Cape Henlopen at 11 a.m. The Vikings blanked the Ravens, 10-0, during the regular season as the two teams ended up tying with Dover for the Henlopen Conference title.

Smyrna (12-6) earned the 14th seed and will travel to No. 3 Caravel (14-4) at 1 p.m. in a rematch of a quarterfinal game from last year. The eventual state-champion Buccaneers rallied to win that game, 7-6.

Sussex Central (11-7) is seeded 15th and plays at Salesianum (15-3) at 2 p.m. while Milford (11-7) earned the Henlopen South’s automatic bid to make the tournament as the 16th seed. The Buccaneers will travel to top-seeded St. Mark’s (15-3) at 2 p.m. for a first-round matchup.

Softball

Ten Henlopen teams in tourney: Ten of the 16 teams in the DIAA softball state tournament field are from the Henlopen Conference.

Conference champion Delmar (16-2) is the top seed and will host Henlopen South rival Lake Forest (12-6) at 11 a.m. on Saturday when the tourney gets underway.

Two-time defending state champion Laurel (16-2) is second and meets Smyrna in another all-Henlopen Conference affair at 1 p.m. Henlopen North champion Polytech (17-1) is fourth and hosts Indian River (9-9) at 11 a.m.

Caesar Rodney (13-5) earned the sixth seed and plays No. 11 Woodbridge (12-6) at noon.

Other Henlopen teams in the tournament include Sussex Tech (10-7), seeded ninth, which faces Delaware Military (15-3) at Midway Little League at 1 p.m., and No. 14 Cape Henlopen (9-9), which travels to third-seeded Caravel (13-5) for a 1 p.m. start.

Lacrosse

GIRLS, Cape Henlopen 17, Tower Hill 8: The top-seeded Vikings jumped out to an 11-1 halftime lead before posting the victory over the No. 4 Hillers in the state semifinals.

Cape (13-4) will be going for its seventh straight state title when it faces No. 2 Polytech in the finals on Tuesday at Dover at 7 p.m.

Sarah Tappan (1 assist) netted a game-high six goals for the Vikings on Thursday with Lexi Woodruff (2 assists) scoring four and Lizzie Frederick adding three. Jordan Brown (1 assist), Tess Bernheimer, Cam Wick and Katie Klabe all had one goal apiece.

Sam Broadhurst made four saves and Izzy Cryne had three for the Vikings, who outshot Tower Hill, 29-20.

Track and Field

Dover’s Young-Sanders wins hurdles: Dover High’s Mykele Young-Sanders won both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles at the Meet of Champions, held on Wednesday night at Dover.

The senior, who captured the Division I state title in both events last weekend, won the 110 hurdles in 14.22 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 37.98. He also teamed up to with Darius Taylor, Kyron Robert and Ronald Jones to win the 1,600-meter relay in 3:22.61.

Other downstate winners in the boys’ meet were Dover’s Roderick Brown in the long jump (22-9.75), Cape Henlopen’s Sam Young in the pole vault (15-0) and Lake Forest’s John Flamer in the discus (155-08).

In the girls’ meet, Sussex Central’s Naiya Smith won the 400-meter dash (57.35), Caesar Rodney’s Zoe Scott won the high jump (5-0) and Smyrna’s Myrissa McFolling-Young took the discus (110-02).

Middletown’s Ashley Bailey set a new state record in the pole vault with a leap of 12-3. That broke the mark of 12-2.25 she set a year ago.

Tennis

State finals washed out: The final round of the DIAA boys’ and girls’ tennis state tournament was rained out on Thursday.

The tournaments are now slated to finish on Tuesday at the University of Delaware’s Field House courts in Newark. The first matches will begin at 1:30 p.m.

College baseball

Delaware 3, William & Mary 1: Behind a complete-game gem from senior captain Adam Davis, the Blue Hens stayed alive in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament at The Ballpark at Patriots Point on Thursday.

Davis, a third-team All-CAA pick, allowed just five hits and one earned run as the right-hander went the distance to earn his sixth win of the season.

“Davis really dialed one up today for us,” said Delaware coach Jim Sherman. “He showed why he is a captain today. When his team needed him most, he came up huge with one of the best outings of his career.”

Neither team could manufacture much offense for the first part of the game, but the Hens broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the fifth inning.

Brock Niggebrugge hit a sacrifice fly to score Diaz Nardo (Cape Henlopen) for UD’s first run. Joe Giacchino then hit a two-out double and scored when William & Mary’s Cullen Large committed an error on a Zach Lopes groundball.

No. 5 seed Delaware (24-23), which is now 1-1 in the tourney, plays again today at 10 a.m. in the double-elimination tournament.

College track & field

Wolverines qualify for finals: Wesley College’s 400-meter relay squad of Greg Taylor, DaJahn Lowery, Dominic McAnulty and Matt Bundy ran the eighth-fastest time (41.39) in the preliminaries to qualify for the finals at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore Patrick Schlosser also scored 3,297 points and sits 13th out of 20 athletes after the first day of the decathlon.

Also competing for the Wolverines on Thursday was Delmar High grad De’Vaughn Trader (20-8), who took 18th of 20 competitors in the long jump, and the 1,600-meter relay team of McAnulty, Bundy, Urgy Eado and Anthony Brinkley, which placed 14th of 16 in 3:17.76.
