Roundup: District III tops Europe-Africa 7-1 in Big League World Series

District III scored the first four runs of the game before posting a 7-1 victory over Europe-Africa in the Big League softball World Series on Wednesday night.

The victory leaves the Sussex County squad with a 2-1 record in the tournament, being played at Lower Sussex Little League in Roxana.

District III concludes pool-play today with a 5:30 p.m. game against U.S. Southwest.

Mya Maddox had two hits with an RBI and a run scored for District III with Taylor Collins adding a hit, an RBI and a run. Sami Mumford also drove in a run with Karleigh Carroll contributing two hits.

Leesburg, Va. 5, Middletown Post-25 3: The Delaware state champions dropped their opener in the Mid-Atlantic Regional on Wednesday night in Leesburg, Va.

Middletown grabbed a 3-1 lead with two runs in the third inning and one more in the fourth. But host Leesburg rallied for three runs in the seventh to pull out the win.

Brandon Rohrer and Ryan Zwier each had a hit and an RBI for Middletown, which faces New Jersey today at 1 p.m.

College football

DSU’s Harris named to All-America team: Delaware State junior linebacker Malik Harris has been named to the first College Football Scouting News FCS Preseason All-America first team for the upcoming campaign.

A Preseason All-MEAC second-team pick, Harris was tops on the Hornets and second among all MEAC players in tackles per game (9.5) and total tackles (104) last season. He also ranked second on the team and sixth in the league with 14.5 tackles for loss, in addition to recording 1.5 sacks, an interception, two pass break-ups and a fumble recovery in 2015.

Harris reached double-figures in tackles in seven games, and had 12-or-more stops in five contests during his sophomore season.

He is one of three Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference players on the College Sporting News Preseason All-America first team, joining running back Tarik Cohen and return specialist Kris Gardin, both from North Carolina A&T.

Harris and his Hornet teammates will hold their first preseason practice this Friday at 4 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

Delaware State will kickoff the new season on Sept. 1 at the University of Delaware. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Hornets’ home opener is Sept. 10 against Monmouth. The Hall of Fame contest is set for 5 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

College athletics

UD hosting Dewey event: University of Delaware Athletics, in partnership with the Kent and Sussex County UD Alumni Clubs, is hosting a UD Athletics Beach Party at Grotto Pizza on Route 1 and Read Street in Dewey Beach on Saturday from 2-5 p.m.

New UD Athletic Director Chrissi Rawak and men’s basketball coach Martin Ingelsby, as well as football coach Dave Brock and other members of the UD coaching and administrative staff are slated to be on hand. Cost is $5. Additional costs: Cash bar after first drink, additional food.

Two Hens honored for academics: University of Delaware men’s basketball rising senior Curtis McRoy and recent graduate Sean Locke were named to the 2015-16 National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court this week.
