Whitney DeMora hit three home runs and drove in six runs as defending state champion Polytech High opened the season with a 9-3 win over Indian River in Henlopen Conference softball on Tuesday.

The Panthers broke the game open with five runs in the second inning as they won their 14th game in a row.

Amanda Waishees added three hits to Polytech’s total of nine while pitcher Taylor Pechin earned the win.

Marleye Evans had two hits with an RBI for the Indians.

Smyrna 10, Delmar 0: Jessica Anderson tossed a five-inning three-hitter to earn the shutout.

Freshman Sara Miller went 3-for-3 with three RBI while Taylor Cappella and Kaelyn Press added two hits each for Smyrna, which scored four runs in the second and fifth.

Caesar Rodney 7, Milford 2: The Riders scored three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to give Skye Boris a win in her head coaching debut.

Jordan Mosely was 2-for-3, Stephanie Horne had a double and Mirabella Klebolt scored twice for CR.

Rejene Bowe was 2-for-4 while Megan Fry and Nia Bowe drove in runs for the Buccaneers.

Lake Forest 11, Dover 0: Kerrigan Simpson threw a two-hitter and struck out nine in six innings to earn the shutout for the Spartans.

Brittany Baker had three hits, with a homer, two doubles and a pair of RBI to pace Lake’s 15-hit attack. Brooke Glanden added two hits and five RBI while Grace Aguilar had three hits.

Catera Kennedy added a pair of doubles with Kyra Maddox contributing two hits, including a triple.

Tabriana Miller and Kaila Quick both had a hit for the Senators.

Sussex Tech 7, Sussex Central 6: The Ravens rallied for six runs in the bottom of the seventh to upend the Golden Knights.

Madison Watson’s three-run triple tied the contest before a groundball from Rylee Shockley brought home the winning run. Shannon Lord hit a pair of doubles for Sussex Tech.

Central’s Hayley McCabe (3 RBI) and Morgan Burton (double) both homered.

Woodbridge 10, Seaford 4: The Raiders downed the Blue Jays.

Delmarva Christian 19, Wilm. Christian 1: The Royals scored 12 runs in the first inning and finished with 14 hits in the win.

Camryn Thompson threw a five-inning three-hitter to earn the victory.

Baseball

Smyrna 4, Delmar 0: Jeremy Carrow (six strikeouts in six innings) and John Barkley (two stikeouts in one inning) combined to pitch a two-hit shutout for the Eagles.

Smyrna broke open a scoreless contest with three runs in the third. Nolan Henderson (2-for-3, 1 RBI) and Brendt Penuel (2 RBI) paced the Eagles’ three-hit attack.

Delmar pitcher James Adkins gave up just two hits in five innings while Jordan Haddaway and Fred Frey had one hit each.

Milford 7, Caesar Rodney 4: The Buccaneers rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the victory.

Danny Burgos knocked in the winning run, Shaen Snowden and Jimmy Kucharzyk each had a pair hits and Dante George added a two-run double. Aaron Thornley picked up the win in relief.

Thomas Pomatto collected three RBI for CR while Steven Platt scored twice. The Riders led 4-2 after scoring a run in the top of the sixth.

Woodbridge 7, Seaford 1: Winning pitcher Doug Avery threw four-plus innings for the Raiders, who scored three runs in both the second and fourth innings.

Bryan Widdowson had a hit and an RBI for the Blue Jays.

St. Andrew’s 9, St. Thomas More 0: Lee DeMarkus had two hits for the Ravens in their season-opening loss.

Wilm. Christian 19, Delmarva Christian 0: Micah Magee had both hits for the Royals.

Girls’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 9, St. Mark’s 0: Aleya Cummings tallied three first-half goals as the Riders rolled to the season-opening victory.

Jessie Prillaman (1 assist) and Lynsy Gruwell (2 assists) both added a pair of goals with Julia Lyncha and Kimberly Glasser adding the others.

Goalie Marianna Nuzzo made three saves for the Riders, who outshot the Spartans 25-4 and scored all nine goals in the first half.

Woodbridge 3, Dover 2: Kelsey Eckert’s goal in the 79th minute gave the Raiders the win.

All five goals were scored in the second half with Woodbridge netting the final two. Altia Anderson made seven saves as Dover held advantages of 9-4 in shots and 3-1 in corners.

Kathryn Ford scored both Senator goals.

Milford 2, Polytech 0: The Buccaneers tallied one goal in each half.

Cape Henlopen 1, Sussex Academy 0: Brooke Hollingsworth’s unassisted goal in the 51st minute lifted the Vikings to the win.

Cape, which got three saves from Olivia Baratto, outshot the Seahawks 16-3 and held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.

Kierstin Blatzheim had 15 saves for Sussex Academy.

Delmar 1, Sussex Tech 0: Logan Walls, an eighth-grader, netted the game’s only goal at the 75-minute mark to lift the Wildcats.

Julia Johnson made five saves for Delmar, which held advantages of 8-7 in both corner kicks and shots.

Sussex Tech’s Zoe Stayman stopped six shots.

Wilm. Christian 3, Delmarva Christian 0: Skylar Bennett made 15 saves for the Royals in the loss.

Lacrosse

BOYS, Polytech 6, Middletown 5: Goalie Nate Fairbanks made four key saves in the fourth quarter as the Panthers held on for the victory.

Patrick O’Brien (1 assist) and Zachary Maheu each scored twice for Polytech with Jake Davis and Josh Davis (1 assist) adding one goal apiece.

The Panthers outshot the Cavaliers, 34-20.

Salisbury School 14, Delmarva Christian 2: The Royals scored both their goals in the fourth quarter.

GIRLS, Smyrna 10, Sussex Tech 5: Shannon Noroozi (1 assist) and Alison Sayers tallied three goals apiece to pace the Eagles.

Kaila Hindt (1 assist) and Maddie Price both scored twice for Smyrna, which led 6-0 at halftime. Gabrielle DiRusso made nine saves.

The Ravens’ Morgan Johnson (1 assist) had three goals while Madi Bada and Maddie Morris added one each.

Wilmington Charter 7, Caesar Rodney 5: The Force outscored the Riders, 3-1, in the second half.

Delaney Steele (2 assists) and Kourtney Olsen each scored twice for CR with Kacie Cava adding the other goal. Kaitlyn Longest made 11 saves.

College baseball

Delaware 22, La Salle 1: The Blue Hens finished with 24 hits in the non-conference win.

The Hens (16-5), who won their fourth straight game and 11th in the last 12 outings, jumped out to a commanding 16-0 lead after six innings as they opened with six runs in the first inning, put up four in the third, and scored twice in the second, fourth, and sixth innings.

Delaware reached the 20-run mark for the third time this season and reached the 20-hit plateau for the third time overall. The Hens had nine extra-base hits, including four home runs.

Freshman first baseman Nick Patten hit two home runs and finished with four RBI, sophomore third baseman Diaz Nardo (Cape Henlopen) also hit a home run and knocked in four runs, and sophomore outfielder Calvin Scott hit a three-run homer.

Washington College 14, Wesley 10: The Wolverines couldn’t hold a six-run lead entering the fifth inning as the Shoremen rallied for the win.

Ron Morello, Joseph Hummel, and Eric Willey each had two hits for Wesley (9-9) as the 6-7-8 hitters combined to go 6-for-13 with six runs scored, four RBI, and a double.

Trailing 7-1, the Shoremen tied it in the bottom of the fifth with six runs and took a 9-7 lead in the sixth with a pair of runs on three hits.

College softball

Delaware State 10, UMES 2: The Hornets (9-13) tallied 13 hits, including a season-high three home runs, in the MEAC win.

Sophomore Vanessa Washington drove in three runs in the third with her team-leading fifth homer of the season to give DSU a 4-0 lead.

In the sixth, junior Nicole Brock belted a homer before DSU added a three-run, five-hit outburst in the seventh that began with sophomore Haley Jones connecting on a solo leadoff homerun.

College equestrian

Delaware State 13, Sacred Heart 2: The Hornets were 7-1 winners in the Western competition and outscored the Pioneers 6-1 in the English rides at the Dovington Training Center.

Delaware State also swept the four Most Outstanding Performer awards, with Sofia Zingale (Flat), Tiffany Lee (Fences), Abigail Buckwalter (Horsemanship) and Cheyenne Adams (Reining) capturing the honors.
