Xavier Smith caught four touchdown passes as Florida A&M beat Delaware State 52-30 on Saturday night.

Smith had 184 yards receiving for the Rattlers (8-1, 6-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), and had three scores from starting quarterback Ryan Stanley and one from backup Rasean McKay. Stanley had 253 yards and four touchdown passes.

The Rattlers struck quickly and repeatedly, scoring 31-unanswered points in the first half beginning with Stanley’s 4-yard TD pass to Azende Rey late in the first quarter. Stanley followed up with three touchdown passes to Smith, from 25, 16 and 59 yards, to take a 28-0 lead. Yahia Aly kicked a 37-yard field goal late in the second quarter. Delaware State’s Jose Romo-Martinez answered with a 19-yarder, making it 31-3 at halftime.

The Hornets (1-8, 0-6) closed to 31-16 late in the third but Davonne Kendrick’s 6-yard touchdown run stretched the Rattlers’ lead to 38-16. After another Hornets score, Marcus Williams’ 94-yard kickoff return made it 45-23 to close the quarter.

Thom Bertrand-Hudon ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns for Delaware State.

Volleyball

Conrad 3, Caesar Rodney 1: The Riders fell in the second round of the DIAA state tournament to No. 7-seeded Conrad in four sets.

Red Lion Christian 3, Indian River 1: The Indians dropped their second round matchup 25-16. 25-14, 20-25, 25-19.

Men’s soccer

Delaware 2, Drexel 1: Goals by Timo Hummrich and David Vavrous propelled Delaware to a dramatic 2-1 Senior Night victory over Drexel Saturday night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium as the Blue Hens secured a spot in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.

Delaware, which earned the sixth seed in the championship, will take on third-seeded Hofstra Friday on the campus of second-seeded James Madison in the first round.

Wesley 2, Neumann 1: Justin John-Langba scored an overtime goal in the first round of the AEC tournament.

Darius-David Robinson scored on a penalty kick in regulation. The Wolverines outshot the Knights 8-7 with Jason Sommer in goal who recorded the win and two saves.

College volleyball

Marywood 3, Wesley 1: The Wolverines rallied late to take the third set 25-19 but were unable to pull off the win over Marywood.

Emily Waldridge led the offense with 15 kills and Mary Getty contributing eight.

Caelli Clifford led the defense with 22 digs, Lindsay Burg and Regan Healey right behind Clifford with 12. Burg also had 28 assists to help fuel the offense.

College cross country

UD posts best CAA finish: The Blue Hens posted five runners in the top-20 en route to the highest finish in program history, second-place at the CAA Championships. It’s the first time that Delaware has ever eclipsed long-time power William & Mary, who finished third, with Elon taking home the team title.

Redshirt junior Mackenzie Jones became the highest individual finisher (fourth place – 20:49.6) since 2005 to lead a trio of All-CAA honors for Delaware. The three individual CAA honorees is the most in program history as well.

Jones was joined by seniors Roxanne Ramirez, ninth place at 21:11.9, and Abby Bolt, 13th place at 21:23.7.

The top-five runners for the Blue Hens were separated by just 0:56 and the top-seven runners by just 1:24.

Seven of the top-10 Delaware runners posted their personal collegiate bests, led by Ramirez (33 seconds), Analise Kaminski (22 seconds), Deja Rodriguez-Santiago (20 seconds) and Jones (17 seconds).
