Only 23 players completed their opening rounds before the first day of the 52nd annual Delaware Open golf tournament was postponed by rain on Monday afternoon.

Originally slated to be 54 holes, the tourney will now be a 36-hole event played today at Bear Trap Dunes Golf Course in Ocean View.

The first round will be completed this morning with the final round scheduled to begin at approximately 1 p.m.

Kings Creek’s Chris Krueger, who is four-under par through 15 holes, is the current leader. Four players are tied for second place at two-under.

College baseball

Hens add Grimes as assistant: The University of Delaware baseball program has added veteran coach Scott Grimes to its coaching staff.

Grimes, who will serve in the volunteer assistant coach role, will be responsible for baserunning, outfielders, camps/showcases, and will assist with the hitters.

“We are extremely excited and fortunate to have a coach like Scott join our coaching staff here at the University of Delaware,” said UD head coach Jim Sherman. “I feel he’s one of the top young coaches in our region. He brings a wealth of knowledge from both his playing days and from coaching. I know our players will enjoy working with him as he brings a great passion to the game.”

Grimes joins the Blue Hens after spending the last five seasons at La Salle University. A 2005 graduate of Keystone University, Grimes spent eight seasons in professional baseball, appearing for the Worcester Tornadoes of the Can-Am League and the York Revolution of the Atlantic League.

Grimes made a major impact during his three years with the Revolution, as the Kennett Square, Pa. native holds the franchise mark for stolen bases (67), runs (296), triples (13), walks (200) and games played (347). The former outfielder also ranks second in Revolution history with 45 homers.
