The defending national champion Delaware field hockey team opened its season in impressive fashion with a 7-0 victory over Indiana at Louisville’s Trager Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The No. 3 Blue Hens (1-0) registered their program-record 20th straight win as Delaware posted a shutout in the season opener for the first time since 2007.

Nine Hens tallied at least one point while senior Taylor Lister and junior Greta Nauck led the way with three points (1g, 2a) apiece. Redshirt senior Kayla Devlin tied a career-high with three assists.

“A truly great performance by our entire team,” said coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. “Our team play, possession and defense showed more signs of us having been playing together for quite some time versus this being our season opener. It was a true joy to see them play so well together, sharing the ball and helping each other.”

Senior goalie Emmeline Oltman collected her 50th career victory and ninth career shutout after making five saves.

The Hens are 36-9-2 all-time in season openers. Nauck moved into sixth place in Delaware history with 107 career points and into seventh all-time with 45 career goals.

WOMEN, Navy 2, Delaware State 0: The Hornets allowed an early goal and another later in the opening period to overshadow an otherwise-solid defensive effort in the loss on Friday at the DE Turf Sports Complex.

A little more than three minutes into the contest, the Midshipmen scored the first goal of the match when Ash Fairow fired a shot over the head of DSU goal keeper Leslie Fazio. Fazio had four saves in the second period and six in the match for the Hornets.

Delaware State (0-3) managed four shots in the second period, two of which were saved by Navy keeper Sydney Fortson.
