Smyrna High erupted for 40 points in the first quarter as the defending Division I state champion Eagles opened the season with a decisive 56-0 win over Delcastle in football on Saturday morning.

Roundup: Defending champ Smyrna opens with 56-0 rout of Delcastle

Smyrna High erupted for 40 points in the first quarter as the defending Division I state champion Eagles opened the season with a decisive 56-0 win over Delcastle in football on Saturday morning.

Leddie Brown, a junior transfer from Eastern Christian Academy, scored four touchdowns, including the first three in the contest, as Smyrna won its 11th game in a row. Brown scored on passes of 63 yards and 66 yards from quarterback Nolan Henderson.

Will Knight ran for a pair of TDs and also scored five two-point conversions. Henderson threw for three TDs while Smyrna posted its fifth shutout in the last 14 games.

Cape Henlopen 49, Cape May, N.J. 12: Kolbi Wright scored two touchdowns as the Vikings rolled to the victory in their season opener.

Cape Henlopen led 36-0 at halftime in the contest as it beat Cape May for the third straight year.

Six different players scored TDs for the Vikings. Benjamin Ashby’s 43-yard scoring run was the longest.

Boys’ soccer

Newark Charter 3, Dover 2: Quinton Kramarck’s overtime goal lifted Newark Charter to the win at the DAAD Upstate/Downstate Challenge at Dover.

Emerson Diaz and Gavin Williams both scored second-half goals for the Senators in their season opener.

Wilmington Charter 4, Caesar Rodney 0: The Force netted three first-half goals before blanking the Riders.

Kevin Eriksen tallied three goals for Wilmington Charter.

Appoquinimink 6, Milford 3: Warren Hyppolite scored twice with Eleazar Ramirez adding another goal as the Buccaneers lost their season opener.

The Jaguars opened up a 4-0 halftime lead.

Seaford 1, Del. Public Safety & Security 0: The Blue Jays netted a first-half goal to pick up the win at Dover.

Field hockey

Polytech 5, Washington, Md. 2: Camryn Dennis scored a goal in each half as the Panthers improved to 2-0.

MacKenzie Estrada, Shannon Stephan and Madison Knight also scored goals for Polytech, which finished with advantages of 17-9 in shots and 12-7 in corners. Goalie Holly Rembold made seven saves.

St. Mark’s 2, Caesar Rodney 1: Haydan Lord scored a first-half goal for the Riders as they dropped their season opener on Saturday.

CR finished with advantages of 11-7 in shots and 9-3 in corners against the Spartans, who broke a 1-1 tie on a goal with 22:04 remaining in the second half. Jessie Prillaman added an assist.

Delmar 7, Pocomoke, Md. 0: Peyton Kemp tallied four goals to lead the Wildcats to the victory.

Delmar held decisive advantages of 39-2 in shots and 11-0 in corners. Ashlyn Carr, Sasha Adams and Morgan Fletcher also scored goals for the Wildcats, who led 4-0 at halftime.
