The Caesar Rodney High boys and Cape Henlopen High girls took home team titles at the Henlopen Conference swimming championships Saturday at Sussex Academy.

Cape Henlopen swept the outstanding swimmer awards as Alec Hochrein and Molly Weeks won the meet’s Vince Morris Awards. Hochrein won the boys 50- and 100-yard freestyle races while Weeks won a pair of individual races (200- and 500-yard freestyles).

The CR boys were led by champions Ethan Herring in the 500-yard freestyle and Nick Hartmann in the 100-yard backstroke.

Caesar Rodney recorded 354 points to edge second-place Cape (318) for the boys’ team title while the Cape girls tallied 417 points ahead of Sussex Tech’s 393.

Indian River’s Colin Crandel won the boys’ Coach of the Year award and Cape’s Bill Geppert earned the girls’ honor.

Caesar Rodney 70, Indian River 39: Joe Williams scored 14 points and Shaft Clark chipped in 13 for the Riders.

College basketball

MEN, Christopher Newport 90, Wesley 50: Junior guard JW Lawson paced the Wolverines with an 18-point effort off the bench. Lawson went 8-of-13 from the field, including knocking down a three-pointer and a free throw.

Junior forward Paul Clemons pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and added eight points for the Wolverines. Sophomore Tyrone Craven dished out four assists in the loss.

Marcus Carter led the Captains, who are ranked No. 3 nationally, with 20 points.

WOMEN, Christopher Newport 66, Wesley 32: In her first game since mid-January, junior guard Tiyanna Gibbs led the Wolverines off the bench with 11 points. Sophomore guard Monshea Newsome-Murray pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to tie a career-best. Newsome-Murray also tallied six points.

Senior forward Brionna Johnson notched eighth points and seven rebounds while senior guard Adriane Fraser added four points in the loss.

College lacrosse

MEN, Delaware 18, Mount St. Mary’s 5: Trupert Ortlieb and his teammates enjoyed a scoring explosion Saturday afternoon as he notched a career-high six goals on the way to the Blue Hens’ victory over Mt. St. Mary’s.

Delaware (1-1) led 6-3 at halftime but hit the back of the net an incredible nine times on just 15 shots in the third period to take control and cruise along to their most one-sided victory in five years.

Ortlieb a third-year transfer from Providence, had scored just five times in 14 career games entering the contest but led the UD onslaught by scoring six goals on just seven shots to lead the scoring explosion. He scored three goals in each half and got the second half momentum swing underway by scoring twice in the first 2:18 of the second half to get things moving.

WOMEN, Delaware 10, Georgetown 9: Junior midfielder Becky Gohsler exploded for a career-high six goals for Delaware.

Gohsler, who previously never tallied more than three goals in a game, added three ground balls, two draw controls and one caused turnover in the win.

Senior midfielder Kirsten Hale registered her third career hat trick while classmate Jamie Schwartz posted UD’s other goal on the afternoon.

College softball

St. John’s 8, Delaware 2: The Blue Hens opened the scoring during the bottom of the second inning when Devon Steiner led off with a single to left and eventually scored on a two-out infield single by Miranda O’Donald. Alyshia Dellatore then led off the bottom of the third by drilling a home run to centerfield, her second career homer.

But Delaware was shut out the rest of the way and fell to 0-3 on the season.

Dellatore and Steiner each finished with two hits for Delaware while Mariah Kondravy, Anna Steinmetz, Emily Neal and O’Donald added one apiece.
