Senior Erika Brown came through in the clutch as the guard put up a floater in the middle of the lane with four seconds remaining to give the University of Delaware women’s basketball team a 67-65 come-from-behind victory over Robert Morris Thursday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens, who trailed for nearly 36 minutes of the contest, never let the Colonials get out of reach and eventually took their first lead of the game with two minutes left in regulation.

Delaware outscored RMU, 12-4, in the final 4:04 while Brown contributed seven of those 12 points.

Brown finished the game with a season- and game-high 18 points in addition to two assists, one rebound and one steal.

“I’m real proud of the resiliency this team showed tonight and it feels good to get back into the win column,” said Blue Hen coach Tina Martin.

“We’re playing really good teams and with every opponent we have to step up, fight and grind it out. And I’m proud to say that this basketball team is doing just that.”

Sophomore Nicole Enabosi added her eighth career double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three assists and two steals.

Redshirt junior Sadé Chatman and senior Hannah Jardine contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively, as the Blue Hens improved to 5-2 on the year and 4-0 at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Rebeca Navarro led the Colonials (3-5) with 17 points while Anna Niki Stamolamprou posted 12 points and eight rebounds and Megan Smith recorded nine points and 10 rebounds.

Hornet women fall at Xavier: Delaware State junior guard Mikah Aldridge scored a game-high 20 points in her return from a three-game injury absence, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Hornets were throttled by Xavier 86-53 at the Cintas Center. The contest wrapped up a string of six straight road games for DSU.

Marquia Turner and Imani Partlow led Xavier with 18 points each, while Raeshaun Gaffney added 11 points for the Musketeers.

Aldridge was 7-for-22 from the field and 6-of-8 at the free throw line to record her season-high point total. She scored 13 points in the second half.

Aaliyah Davis scored a season-high 13 points, while NaJai Pollard also tallied 13 for the Hornets.

Once again, DSU was plagued by poor shooting in the early going.

The Hornets were just 2-for-15 from the field in the first quarter (13.3%), which ended with Xavier ahead 19-7.

Delaware State’s shooting improved slightly in the second quarter (4-16), but the Musketeers stretched their lead to 42-19 at the break.

Xavier shot 56% in the second half to outscore the Hornets 44-34 after intermission.

The Musketeers outrebounded Delaware State 49-28. Partlow led all players with 11 rebounds, including five offensive boards. Xavier outscored DSU 22-9 on second chance points.

Delaware State committed a season-low eight turnovers, its lowest total since recording seven in a 67-57 loss to Long Island on Dec. 11, 2010.

Delaware State will be idle for the next nine days. The Hornets will return to action on Dec. 11 at home for just the second time this season against NJIT.  The contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

Jardine recognized for service: University of Delaware women’s basketball team co-captain Hannah Jardine earned recognition for her hard work off of the court Wednesday as the senior was selected as one of 97 nominees to the 2017 Allstate WBCA Good Works Team®, as announced by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

The esteemed award honors an outstanding group of student-athletes who represent the sport’s finest in the areas of community service and leadership among their peers.  The Allstate WBCA Good Works Team® recognizes players at all levels of college basketball whose charitable involvement and altruistic acts stand out amongst all other student-athletes participating in the sport.  The players nominated embody the true spirit of teamwork and giving back.

A two-time team captain and mechanical engineering major and biomedical engineering minor, Jardine is also a three-year women’s basketball representative for the University of Delaware Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.  Despite having a tremendous workload that comes with such a vigorous academic schedule and being a Division I student-athlete, Jardine is never one to turn down an opportunity to help others.

In addition to her work as a member of SAAC, Jardine has volunteered with the CAA Food Drive, Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, B+ Hero Program, Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, Gilpin Manor Elementary School, The College School, HENS Mentoring, MLK Sanford School and Reps for Kids in addition to involving fellow student-athletes with community service projects.

Field hockey

Delaware’s Nauck honored with Player of the Year award: Delaware sophomore Greta Nauck was named as the program’s first-ever Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Year.

Nauck led the Blue Hens to the first National Championship in program history while Delaware finished the year with a 19-game winning streak and an overall mark of 23-2.

The CAA Player of the Year finished the season first nationally with 3.04 points per game and 1.32 goals per game on a school record 76 points and 33 goals. In just two seasons for Delaware, the midfielder is seventh in program history with 103 career points on 44 goals and 15 assists.

Nauck tallied the game-winning goal in 10 of UD’s 23 victories and came through in the clutch in two huge NCAA Tournament wins.  First, she posted the overtime game-winner in a 3-2 victory at No. 1 Duke in the second round of the tournament before registering the National Championship’s game-winning goal with under six minutes to play for the 3-2 win over North Carolina in the title game.

Men’s soccer

UD’s Delgado named all-star: Delaware senior Guillermo Delgado was named selected to the 2016 Division I ECAC Men’s Soccer All-Star Team.

The 2016 CAA Player of the Year, Delgado is the nation’s active career leader in points (117) and goals (49) and is currently seventh nationally with 1.68 points per game and 14th with 12 goals. Delgado, one of Delaware’s tri-captains, led the CAA in six of nine offensive categories and is second in two others.

“This a very nice way to end a great career for Guillermo and well-deserved given the year he has had leading his team to another CAA title,” remarked UD head coach Ian Hennessy, who recently completed his 11th season at the helm of the Blue Hens.

Delgado’s 32 points this season is good for sixth in UD single-season history while his eight assists tied for fourth and 12 goals tied for eighth.
