Isaiah Brown rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter which proved to be all Sussex Tech would need as the Ravens defeated Caesar Rodney 27-12 in a Henlopen Conference Northern Division football contest on Friday night.

The Ravens improved to 3-2 on the seasons and 1-1 in the Henlopen North. The Riders dropped to 0-2 in the North and 0-5 overall.

Volleyball

Polytech 3, Brandywine 0: Kaylee Williams recorded 15 kills to pace the Panthers to a 25-15, 25-16, 27-25 nonconference victory.

WOMEN, UNC Wilmington 1, Delaware 0: UNCW, which won its second straight game, scored the game’s only goal 10 minutes into the second half and that tally held up the rest of the way to send the Seahawks on to the victory and hand the snakebit Hens their third straight setback.

Following a scoreless first half, the Seahawks (8-3-2, 2-1-1 CAA) netted the game winner when Savannah Andrews fired a shot 25 yards out from the left side into the box.

The shot deflected off a Delaware defender and bounced into the goal behind Blue Hen goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos.

Delaware (3-11, 2-3 CAA) outshot UNCW 15-12 and put 11 of them on goal but Seahawks Carolyn Huddy posted 10 saves, many of them directly into her waiting hands.

“It’s extremely disappointing to lose a game like that on an own goal (not scored directly by team),” said Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda. “It’s especially hard when your team created all the chances we’ve been practicing, everything we have been doing to get those opportunities, and then have the game slip away.”

Natalie Zelenky recorded a game-high six shots, including five on goal, while freshman Jillian Vassallo had a season-high four shots, including a shot from close range with 1:13 left that was denied by Huddy. Rekos recorded three saves for Delaware.

MEN, Sampson up for award: Delaware graduate student Ben Sampson was tabbed Friday as one of 30 men’s soccer student-athletes nationally to be selected as candidates for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award®.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focused on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in the community.

“This is a remarkable achievement for a remarkable young man,” exclaimed Blue Hens head coach Ian Hennessy.  “Ben graduated summa cum laude in May with a degree from one of the University’s most challenging department and his only blemish was a single A-.  He did all of this while participating on a team recognized as one of the better soccer programs in the nation.  This is an opportunity for our entire school to celebrate his successes on the field and off.  I am extremely proud of Ben.”

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified with NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

College golf

Hens tied for sixth at invitational: The University of Delaware women’s golf team fired a 295 score on Friday to end the first day of the Ron Moore Women’s Intercollegiate in a tie for sixth place.

Pepperdine leads the 18-team field with a 280 score, while host Denver sits in second place at 289. Colorado is third at 292, Georgetown and Nebraska are tied for fourth at 293, while the Blue Hens, Kentucky and Long Beach State are all tied for sixth place.

UD senior Vitoria Teixeira carded an even par 72 on the par 72, 6,450-yard course at Highlands Ranch Golf Club, ending the day in a tie for 13th place. Valentina Mueller is tied for 20th place with a one over par 73, while Ariane Klotz fired a two over par 74 to end the round tied for 29th place.

Grace Chua is tied for 52nd place following her four over par 76, while Ashley Dingman carded a six over par 78 to end the Day tied for 75th place.

Katrina Prendergast of Colorado State leads the field with a four under par 68, while two players are one shot back.
