For the first time since 2016, Madison Brengle has advanced to the second round of the Australian Open.
The 28-year-old from Dover needed just 59 minutes to top Japan’s Misaki Doi, 6-4, 6-0, in her first-round match played late Monday night.
Brengle was only 2-4 all-time vs. Doi coming into Monday’s match. But she has now won three of the last four meetings since 2015.
Doi, 27, is ranked No. 133 in the world in women’s singles while Brengle is No. 89.
Brengle played her usual steady match on Monday, making only nine unforced errors to Doi’s 37. Doi also double-faulted four times in the first set and five times in the match.
In the second round, Brengle takes on seventh-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czeceh Republic.
In the first set on Monday, Brengle looked like she was in control when she won the first three games — breaking Doi’s serve twice in the process. Doi did come back, cutting Brengle’s advantage to only 4-3 and 5-4.
Finally, though, Brengle held serve, taking the final game 60-15 to win the set, 6-4.
Brengle has enjoyed some of her best Grand Slam success in Australia, making the fourth round in 2015 and the third round in 2016.
