Freshman Jessica Bergold’s first half goal was enough as the Smyrna High field hockey team defeated Dover High 1-0 on Thursday night.

Smyrna senior goalie Elana Montejo made 12 saves to earn the shutout. She also recorded the 500th save of her varsity career.

Alexis Moore had the assist on the game-winning goal as the Eagles improved to 8-5-1. Dover dropped to 8-6.

Milford 2, Indian River 1: Katelyn Melvin and Megan Fry netted the Milford goals as the Buccaneers rallied from a goal down to earn the victory.

Cape Henlopen 7, Woodbridge 0: Marcella Sabbagh’s two goals paced the Vikings on Thursday.

Alia Marshall, Lindsay Monigle, Annie Judge, Chloe Schaeffer and Kaitlyn Klabe contributed a goal each for the Vikings who remained unbeaten against Delaware opposition this year.

Delmar 4, Sussex Tech 1: Jordan Moore scored a pair of goals while Ashlyn Carr and Peyton Kemp added a goal apiece in the Wildcat win.

Boys’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 3, Appoquinimink 2: Ricardo Hernandez netted two second half goals for the Riders who dealt Appoquinimink just its second loss of the season.

Since losing their first three games, the Riders have won 11 in a row. David Haynes and Tommy Pomatto provided the CR assists. The Riders’ first goal came on an own goal in the first half.

Sussex Central 3, Milford 2: Dalendy Dupervil gave the Golden Knights the victory with a goal in overtime.

Kel Ordonez-Garcia tied the game for Sussex Central on a penalty kick with a minute remaining in the second half.

Volleyball

Smyrna 3, Middletown 0: Kylie McCusker paced the Eagles with nine kills and 22 assists.

Set scores were 26-24, 25-16 and 25-17.

Caesar Rodney 3, Milford 0: Sara Cessna’s eight kills helped CR earn the 25-16, 25-5, 25-9 victory.

Cape Henlopen 3, Seaford 0: The Vikings recored the win 25-10, 25-8, 25-11.

Delaware Military Academy 3, Polytech 0: The Panthers fell in straight sets 25-18, 25-10, 25-6.

College football

UD hires search firm: Chrissi Rawak, Director of Athletics and Recreation Services, announced today that the University of Delaware has retained Korn Ferry, one of the world’s most respected executive search firms with vast experience in coaching searches, to assist as consultants on the hiring of the Blue Hens next head football coach.

Korn Ferry has assisted in the hiring of high-level athletic administrators and head coaches at Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Michigan, Florida and multiple other universities across the country.

Jed Hughes, Vice Chairman of Korn Ferry’s Sports Practice, will be part of the firm’s efforts on Delaware’s behalf. His relationships within sports and intercollegiate athletics are extensive, having spent twenty years coaching in professional and intercollegiate football and working for five Hall of Fame coaches.

A national search for the position is currently underway.

College soccer

Hens’ Sampson honored for academics: For the fourth straight season, Delaware graduate student Ben Sampson earned CoSIDA Academic All-District® honors, as announced Thursday by the organization.

Following a medical redshirt, Sampson decided to return to the classroom to utilize his fifth year of eligibility this fall to pursue a Master’s in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a concentration in signal processing, communications and controls.  The 2014 CAA Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America® selection, he graduated summa cum laude and top of his class this past spring with a 3.989 cumulative GPA.  His GPA was the highest amongst all NCAA Division I District 2 selections.

“Ben embodies the NCAA ideals of what a student-athlete looks like,” commented Blue Hens head coach Ian Hennessy.  “He has been exceptional in the classroom and enjoyed an exciting playing career while helping build a program that gains respect nationally.”

Sampson, a two-time team captain, displays a similar hallmark leadership on the field, in the classroom and in the community. He has remained a mainstay on the pitch for Delaware and to date has started 79 of 80 games played in a Blue Hens uniform while rarely seeing less than 90 minutes played in a contest. For his career, Sampson has garnered 10 goals and four assists for 24 points.
