Alyssa Ball tossed a complete game shutout as the Caesar Rodney High offense pounded out 11 hits for a 5-0 nonconference softball victory over Concord High on Thursday afternoon.

Courtney Malin scored once and drove in a run, finishing 2-for-3. Alexis Howerin was 1-for-2 with a triple and Kendall Lewis went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored.

With the win, the Riders moved to 4-0 overall.

Cape Henlopen 8, Middletown 3: Jordyn Virden belted a three-run home run as the Vikings scored five times in the top of the seventh.

Baseball

Polytech 14, Wilmington Charter 0: The Panthers were led by a pair of grand slams, one by Carter Chasanov and one from Cole Garey, in the nonconference victory.

Miguel Rivera pitched five innings of shutout ball for the win as Polytech improved to 3-1.

Dover 16, Laurel 0: The Senators scored six runs each in the first and the third innings on their way to a five-inning Henlopen Conference win.

Dwight Wilson homered, Tyler Rosello went 4-for-4 while Jordan Hutchins and Garrett Lawson each finished 2-for-2. Jared Hickox picked up the win with five strikeouts in three innings for Dover (5-0).

Perez Nichols led the Laurel offense with two hits.

Concord 7, Caesar Rodney 5: The Raiders overcame an early 3-0 deficit to deal the Riders a nonconference defeat.

Blake Donovan had a hit and two sacrifice bunts at the plate for CR. Quintin Ivy, Matt Atkinson and Robert Williams each also had hits for the Riders.

Boys’ lacrosse

Lake Forest 10, Dover 8: In a game played on Wednesday night, Austin Aguilar and Carter Kenton netted hat tricks to pace the Spartans. Ben Moore and Dawaunta Parker added a pair of goals each.

College equestrian

DSU coach wins award: Jennifer Ridgley, head equestrian coach at Delaware State, has been honored for the Hornets’ success this season. Ridgley was given the 2016 United Equestrian Conference Coach-of-the-Year award.

Also, Delaware State senior Brooke Moore has been named to the All-United Equestrian Conference Team for Horsemanship, while Hornet sophomore Hayley Anderson was selected to the team for Equitation over Fences.

Ridgley has led the Hornets to the National Collegiate Equestrian Association National Championship for the first time in team history this season. The championship is scheduled for April 14-16 at the Extraco Events Center in Waco, Tex.

In addition, the Hornets entered the NCEA Top 10 rankings for the first time in team history this season. DSU will enter the national championships as the No. 9 team in the latest NCEA poll.

Delaware State’s rise has been bolstered by victories over three nationally-ranked teams this season.  DSU defeated (then) No. 7 SMU and No. 9 South Carolina on consecutive days earlier this month. South Carolina was also the 2015 national champion. The Hornets defeated No. 8 New Mexico last November.

College football

DSU announces coaching changes: Delaware State head football coach Kenny Carter has announced two staff additions and a promotion.

Joining the Hornets as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach is Gerard Wilcher, who most recently served in the same position at Seton Hill University of the Div. II Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Wilcher also spent 10 seasons, the last two as co-defensive coordinator, at Lehigh University. His resume’ also includes stops at Cornell and the University of Massachusetts, where he helped guide the Minutemen to the 1998 Div. I-AA national championship.

Wilcher was a four-year football letterwinner at Morehouse College before joining the coaching profession. He replaces Jamie Bryant as DSU’s defensive coordinator after Bryant accepted a coaching position at Colorado State University after one season with the Hornets.

Carter has also appointed Steve Atkinson as the new linebackers coach for the Hornets. Atkinson also comes to Delaware State from Seton Hill University, where he worked with new Hornet defensive coordinator Gerard Wilcher.

Prior to his tenure at Seton Hill, Atkinson served five years as Director of Player Development at the University of Virginia. Before that, he was Director of Football Operations at the University of Richmond.

His college coaching experience also includes time at George Mason University as defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator from 2003-07. Atkinson was defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Fitchburg State during the 2007 season.

Atkinson replaces Andrew Faison on the Hornet coaching staff. Faison is now on the staff of DSU’s MEAC rival Norfolk State after two seasons with the Hornets.

In addition, Carter has announced that DSU running backs/tight end coach Vincent White has been promoted to associate head coach. White rejoined the Hornet coaching staff in 2015 after a one year stint at Delaware State in 2005.

College softball

Delaware sweeps Morgan State: The Blue Hens swept a non-conference doubleheader from Morgan State, 5-2 and 8-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the Coppin State Softball Field.

In game one, UD pitcher Kiersten Coffman set a school record by striking out 17 batters, as she improved to 11-4 after allowing two runs on four hits in the complete game effort. The senior righthander struck out the side in the first, fourth, fifth and seventh innings to break the previous record of 15 set by Lindsay Jones against George Mason in 2006.

Delaware received another exceptional pitching performance from Carolyn Szymanski during the nightcap, as she struck out 13 batters while walking just one in a one-hit shutout.

College tennis

Hens name new men’s coach: Delaware Interim Director of Intercollegiate Athletics & Recreation Services Dr. Matthew J. Robinson announced Thursday the hiring of Bruce Myers as the head coach of the men’s tennis program, effective immediately.

Myers joins the Blue Hens after spending two seasons at the helm of the women’s tennis program at Longwood University.  His career also includes stints at North Carolina A&T, Randolph-Macon College and Immaculata University.

During Myers’ time at Longwood, the Lancers compiled a 16-21 overall record and 2-8 mark in Big South play.  He led Longwood to a 10-14 overall mark last season, the program’s first 10-win season since 2011-12.  Before stepping down at Longwood earlier this month, Myers posted a record of 6-7 through the first half of the season.

In his first season with the Lancers, the school’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee selected Myers as the 2014-15 Longwood Coach of the Year.
