Jessica Anderson pitched a four-hitter as Smyrna High blanked Wilmington Charter, 10-0, in nonconference softball on Friday afternoon.

The Eagles (7-2) scored six runs in the first inning before winning their sixth game in a row.

Lexi Moore contributed three of Smyrna’s 14 hits with Kayla Wilson (2 RBI), Laiken Zay, Sara Miller (3 RBI), Madison Drummond, and Kaelyn Press (3 RBI) all adding two hits each.

Baseball

St. Andrew’s 8, Lake Forest 3: Trailing 3-2, the Cardinals scored five runs in the fifth to take the lead for good.

The Spartans were limited to only two hits in the contest.

College baseball

Delaware 8, James Madison 4: Shortstop Jeremy Ake produced a career-high four hits and pair of RBI as the Blue Hens (18-14, 5-5 CAA) won the series opener.

Facing a 3-0 deficit, the Hens scored a run in the third and four more in the fourth.

In the seventh Brian Mayer extended the Hens’ lead to 7-4 by hitting a two-run double.

Coppin State 8, Delaware State 3: Coppin State broke open a close game with four runs in the eighth.

DSU has dropped its last four games to fall to 9-18 overall and 5-8 in the MEAC. Coppin State is 8-20 and 6-7.

Delaware State starter Lane DeLeon (1-3) was the tough-luck loser in the contest. He allowed eight hits and four runs (two earned), while striking out seven without a walk in seven innings.

Evan Regez had three of Delaware State’s seven hits to raise his season average to .357.

College lacrosse

WOMEN, Delaware 11, William & Mary 2: The Blue Hens came out of the gates strong and never looked back in posting the CAA victory.

Junior Becky Gohsler led the way with five points (4g, 1a) and three caused turnovers while tying career-highs with five draw controls and five ground balls.

Seniors Coley Ricci and Jamie Schwartz added two goals apiece for Delaware (2-0 in CAA, 7-5 overall).

Ricci also tallied five caused turnovers, a mark that matched Gohsler’s total against Colorado and is good to tie for third in program single-game history.

Delaware has won six straight over W&M to take a 13-12 all-time series lead.

College softball

DSU rallies for split: Delaware State scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Morgan State 9-8 in the second game of a MEAC North doubleheader. The Bears won the opener 2-1 in eight innings.

DSU freshman Hannah Shields retired the Bears in order in the top of the seventh inning to secure the win. Shields allowed one run in three inning of relief to collect her team-best sixth win of the season (6-9).

Jasmine Melgoza was 3-for-4 with a run batted in, and Dani Velez had two hits and an RBI,

Delaware State outhit Morgan State 8-4 in the opener. Micaela Cummings and Khaliyah Flournory had two hits each for the Hornets.

Hens drop two to JMU: Delaware dropped a pair of five-inning Colonial Athletic Association contests to No. 15 James Madison, 10-2 and 13-1.

The day got off to a promising start for the Blue Hens (17-20, 5-6 CAA), who scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning of the opener. Giovanna Kolofer singled up the middle with one out, and after Mariah Kondravy singled to left, but runners scored when Anna Steinmetz lined a double into the gap in rightcenter.

However JMU (36-6, 9-2 CAA) quickly answered with five runs in the top of the second and never trailed again the rest of the day.

The Dukes have won the last 17 meetings between the schools.

College golf

Wesley third in CAC: The Wesley College men’s golf team sits in third place after the first day of the Capital Athletic Conference Golf Championships.

Wesley carded a 316. Christopher Newport is in the lead with a 292 while Mary Washington is in second with a 315.

Dylan Chessher (Caesar Rodney) shot a 75 to tie for fifth place, two strokes off the lead.

College equestrian

Hornets ousted by A&M: Texas A&M proved why it’s one of the nation’s elite programs with 13-2 victory over Delaware State in the opening round of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association tournament on Thursday.

The fifth-seeded Aggies were 8-0 winners in the Hunter Seat competition and posted a 5-2 victory in the Western rides to advance in the 12-team tournament.

The Hornets, appearing in the national championship competition for the second year in a row, were seeded 12th.

Abigail Buckwalter tallied one of the DSU’s points with a victory in Horsemanship. Buckwalter rode “Hogan” to a score of 144.5, tops among all competitors in the event.

Cheyenne Adams was also a winner for the Hornets with a score of 137.5 aboard “Captain” in Reining. Elizabeth Koons had DSU’s highest Reining score (140 on “Boss”), but was edged out by Texas A&M’s Madison Bohman (143).
