Smyrna High scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to edge Caesar Rodney, 5-3, in Henlopen Conference softball on Saturday afternoon.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Eagles (8-3 in conference, 10-3 overall).

Smyrna scored three runs in top of the sixth only to have the Riders tie it with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Eagles’ Olivia Faragher had two RBI and a run scored while winning pitcher Jessica Anderson threw a four-hitter.

Alyssa Ball tossed a six-hitter for CR while adding two hits, including a double, with an RBI. Kendall Lewis also had two hits and scored a run.

Delmarva Christian 16, Glasgow 6: The Royals broke open a tied game with six runs in the third and eight in the fourth.

Delmarva Christian finished with 15 hits in the contest.

Baseball

Polytech 14, Seaford 4: Miguel Rivera went 4-for-4 as the Panthers picked up a Henlopen Conference victory on Saturday.

Logan Olshenske and Cole Garey both had home runs and combined for five RBI with winning pitcher Louis Whitaker allowing only four hits in six innings.

Seaford’s Stephon Short hit a three-run home run in the fifth.

Polytech 13, Del. Public Safety & Security 2: Coley Garey hit a pair of homeruns and drove in six runs as the Panthers won their second game of the day.

Carter Chasanov also homered and collected four RBI for Polytech, which scored six runs in the second inning.

Red Lion Christian 5, Delmarva Christian 1: The Royals led early after scoring a first-inning run but the Lions answered with three in the third to take the win.

Salesianum 7, Indian River 1: IR’s Jacob Hudson pitched four no-hit innings before the Sals scored four runs in the fifth and three in the seventh to take the win.

Hudson also had an RBI single in the fourth to give the Indians a 1-0 lead.

Lacrosse

GIRLS, Middletown 14, Smyrna 9: Emily Saylor netted six goals to pace the Cavs on Friday night.

Maddie Price had a team-high five goals for the Eagles with Shabnam Noroozi-Pooya (2 goals), Kaila Hindt and Elicie Edmond also scoring.

Tennis

CR girls win Henlopen tourney: Caesar Rodney High won its 10th straight Henlopen Conference Tournament title in girls’ tennis on Saturday.

The Riders won championships on all five courts to finish with 30 points. Dover took second with 18 points in the event, that was played at Sea colony in Bethany.

The boys’ tourney only completed the semifinal round on Saturday after Friday’s opening day was cut short by rain. The boys’ tournament will conclude on Monday.

At girls’ first singles, the Riders’ Hannah Morris beat Dover’s Aspen Ozer, 6-0, 6-2, in the finals. Morris lost only four games in her three tourney victories.

CR’s other confereence champions were Halle Parker (second singles), Natasha Sijan (third singles), Micaela Thorogood-Caroline Pangle (first doubles) and Megan Jones-Madison Cole (second doubles).

College baseball

Delaware 9, Towson 6: Thanks to some late-inning hitting heroics, Delaware is still alive in the Colonial Athletic Association playoff hunt.

Down 5-3 after six innings, the Blue Hens scored six runs over the final three innings to post the victory.

The Hens (30-20, 8-12 CAA) bounced back from a 13-inning loss on Friday to move back to within a game of the fifth-place Tigers (19-31, 9-11 CAA) in the league standings. The two teams will square off in the final game of the three-game set today at 1 p.m.

Delaware, which reached the 30-win plateau for the first time since 2013, scored a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Diaz Nardo (Cape Henlopen) and then took control for good with four runs in the eighth to take an 8-6 lead.

Kevin Mohollen plated the first run of the inning with an RBI single, Kyle Baker’s two-run double put the Hens ahead, and Jordan Glover pushed the lead to two runs with an RBI single.

Mohollen, Baker, and Glover each recorded three hits to highlight the 17-hit attack with Mohollen and Nardo each adding three RBI.

UMBC 3, Delaware State 2: Mitchell Carroll doubled in Tim Kelly with one out in the 11th inning to give Maryland-Baltimore County the win on Friday.

The loss overshadowed a solid pitching effort by the Hornets (13-35), who allowed just eight hits and struck out seven in the three-hour-26-minute affair.

Starter Lane DeLeon (Sussex Tech) allowed just three hits and one run, while striking out two in five innings. Darrien Ragins gave up two hits and one run to go along with two strikeouts in two innings.

Garrett Coverdale allowed only one hit and struck out two in  2.1 scoreless innings. Hunter McVey entered the game in the 10th inning with the potential game-winning run at third with one, but stranded the runner.

Darnel Maisonet was 2-for-5 with a triple and double to give him 10 hits in 16 at-bats in the last four games (.625). The Hornets stranded 12 men on base, including three in the 10th inning.

College track & field

Reid, Hens shine at ECACs: Sophomores Tyra Reid (Caesar Rodney) and Liz McGroarty and the 400-meter and 3,200-meter relay teams each put in solid performances on Saturday and advanced to the finals for Delaware at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

In Saturday’s trials, Reid, the Colonial Athletic Association champion, placed seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.86, the 400-meter relay team of Paige Thompson-Charles, Tyler Jackson, Reid, and Latazah Coleman also placed seventh with a clocking of 46.69, McGroarty was eighth in the 1,500 meters (4:30.65), and the 3,200 relay tandem of Jeanette Bendolph (Caesar Rodney), Betsy Erlanger, Emily Paolucci and Maame Kyeadea-Amponsah was also eighth in 9:14.58.

In addition, Sarah Hillman (Polytech) will compete in the shot put finals this morning. The sophomore placed second in the discus with a throw of 156-8 to earn All-East honors.
