Ronald C. "Ron" Ovens, 64

EAST NEW MARKET - Ronald C. "Ron" Ovens, 64, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2008 at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.

He was born in New York on Oct. 21, 1943 and was a son of the late Clayton and Margaret Hoagland Ovens.

Mr. Ovens graduated from North Babylon High School. He continued his education and received his B.A. degree at Bowie State University, and then received his master's degree in administration at George Washington University and he also had taken his Doctorial courses at George Washington University.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1971 in the Military Intelligence.

On June 26, 1971 he married the former Sandra English. He taught school and was a Vice Principal in Calvert County. He was Principal in Charles County. Mr. Ovens had 27 years of service Administration.

Mr. and Mrs. Ovens moved to Dorchester County in December 2003. Mr. Ovens helped out with Bay Country Communications for two years upon his passing.

Some of his hobbies were Chess, reading, fishing and traveling. Mr. Ovens was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church where he helped with Soup Day and the Flower Fair, United Methodist Men, Veterans' Recognitions Committee and with the Maryland You Are Beautiful program.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Ovens of East New Market; a brother, Harrison Phillip Ovens and wife, Lynn of North Carolina; a sister, Carol Ovens Rizzo and husband, Michael of Texas; parents-in-law, Harold and Lilly Mae English of Federalsburg; brother and sister-in-law, Walt and Janice English of Rhodesdale; niece, Cindy Foster and husband, Mark of Trappe; nephew, Walt English Jr. of Rhodesdale; two great-nieces, Cassidy and Kelsey Foster of Trappe; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews in Florida and California.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Fred Bahr and the Rev. A. Delmer Willey Jr. officiating. Burial will be private. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be Ron Schaake, Mark Foster, Walt English Jr., Jason Warfield, Edwin Lloyd and Rodney Cannon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association, 114 Baptist St., Salisbury, MD 21801.
