
CAMDEN - Roland Neeman, loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones at BayHealth after a short illness on Feb. 4, 2013. Roland retired from the State of Delaware Highway Department. He stayed active after his retirement and was very dedicated to the Felton Fire Company which he joined in 1948. He was inducted into the Delaware State Fire Service Fighters Hall of Fame. His years of dedication stemmed from 1949 where he served as secretary of Felton Fire Co. for approximately 16 years. In 1956 he served on the committee to buy the first ambulance and was appointed President of Kent County Volunteer Firemen's Association in 1960 and in 1968 was the State President of Delaware Volunteer Firemen's Association. In 1988 he was elected President of the Felton Fire Co. where he also served as Bingo Chairman for 13 years. From 1990-95 he was treasurer of the Kent County Firemen's Association. Presently he was involved with the Fire Recorder for Kent County for several years, represented Delaware Gaming Board, served as Chairman of the parades, was President of the Felton High School PTA, President of the Band Parents Association at Lake Forest, served 20 years on the Felton United Methodist Church Board, and taught Sunday School for 7th and 8th grades, was Chairman for Kent County Volunteer Firemen's Ladies Night Committee for 32 years and also served as Vice Chairman for the 33rd representative District in 1984 and in 1988 served as Chairman. Roland's other achievements included being awarded the Fireman of the year in 2000, served as Chairman of the Felton Street Fair for 10 years, was a member of the Felton Alumni Association for 35 years, President of the alumni Association in 1965. He also worked with Easter Seals, Cancer Society and the United Fund in Felton and Canterbury. He was Chairman of the Fire Brigade at the State Highway Administration Building. He also assisted in organizing Delaware State employees Credit Union. From 1995-2012 he was an honorary member of Kent County Board of Appeals. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Emma Catherine Neeman; daughters, Debbie Abbott Kenton (Herb), Faye Neeman Smith (Neal), Nancy Neeman Melvin (Dale), son, Roland "Buster" Neeman (Nancy); stepdaughter, Judy Sylvester (Bob); stepson, Mike Wooters (Joy); grandchildren, Troy Sylvester, Jamie Abbott Parker, Billy Abbott (deceased), Wendy, Jordon and Shelby Smith, Natalie Vosbury Dixon, Stacy Vosbury, Wesley and Taryn Neeman, and Brett Wooters; and great-grandchildren, Seth and Hayden Parker, Owen Piro, Brysen Dixon, Sierra, Ashlynn and Weston Sylvester. Roland's life will be celebrated with fireman's rites at noon on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013 at the Felton Fire Company. The family will receive friends starting at 10 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Felton Fire Company, P.O. Box 946, Felton, DE 19943.
