
MIDDLETOWN - Roger Allen Martin died on Oct. 26, 2017 after a brief hospitalization surrounded by family.
He was born Feb. 27, 1934 in Delmar, Md. Shortly after graduating from Laurel High School in 1952, he served three years with the U.S. Army, 27 months of which were in Munich, Germany in Military Intelligence.
He graduated In 1961 from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor's in Political Science and German. In 1972, he became the first student to complete his Master's Degree in German from the University and also was elected to his first term to the Delaware State Senate where he served until 1994. He was Majority Leader of the Senate in 1977-78 and again in 1994. He has taught various foreign languages and history at Middletown High School. He also taught at Governor Bacon Health Center, Salesianum, Wesley College and the University of Delaware. His hobbies include music, reading, writing Delaware history and travel. His affiliations include past Board Member of the the Historical Society of Delaware, Pencader Charter School and Preservation Delaware, past President of Friends of Delaware Archives, Board Member of Corbit-Calloway Library and the White Clay Creek Coalition, Assistant Editor of the Delaware Historical Society Magazine, Member Fort Delaware Society, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and has authored nine books on Delaware History.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Ruth Martin; and brothers, Alvin and Charles.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Adelaide Naylor Martin; daughters, Lisa Raubenheimer married to Peter, who have two children, Joey and Chelsea, and Susan Johnson married to David, who have twins, Jackie and Michael; and a brother, Donald Martin.
Visitation will be Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad Street, Middletown, DE 19709. Funeral service will begin at 12 p.m. Internment with military honors to follow at Old Drawyers Cemetery.
