Robert Patterson Jones, 83 CAMBRIDGE - Our dear father, Robert Patterson Jones, departed this life November 10, 2009 after a brief but aggressive leukemia. He was 83 years young and surrounded by the love of his family. Dad was born October 7, 1926 at Garden of Eden to parents James Radcliffe Jones, Sr. and Lyda Johnson Jones. He was raised in Dorchester County and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1944. Dad grew up helping on the farm and his first job was with the Phillips Packing Company. He served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946 as a Fire Control Technician on the USS Antietam. He worked briefly in Bel Air, MD starting a 33 year career with C & P Telephone Company after which he returned to Dorchester County. His employment with C & P Telephone Company was from June 23, 1951 through February 1984 when he retired. His career included lineman, general installer and PBX installer and repairman. Dad married our Mom, Mary G. Garing, on October 1, 1951. Dad's strong belief that he provide for his family allowed Mom to be a homemaker. This meant that Mom was always there for us as we grew-up and able to have lunch for Dad when he worked close by. Dad shared his appreciation for Dorchester County with us as we grew-up with Sunday rides throughout the county. He never failed to point out the changing of the leaves in fall and the appreciation of spring. During his retirement he enjoyed sitting on the porch, feeding and watching the antics of the squirrels and birds that frequented his numerous feeders and bird baths. Dad is survived by his wife and lifelong companion Mary G. Jones, four children and their spouses: Ellen and James Elben of Denton, Kay and Stan Trice of Cambridge, Susan and Thomas (Bo) Todd of Galestown and Scott and Tammy Jones of Salem. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Aubrey and Thomas Cutchin of Ocean City, Robert and Laurie Elben of St. Michaels, Rachel and Doug Harmon of St. Inigoes, David Trice of Greensboro and Evan Jones of Salem; five great-grandchildren, Damian, Gavin and Derowen Cutchin of Ocean City, and Sarah and Allison Harmon of St. Inigoes; numerous nephews and nieces, who have been supportive and caring. Dad's memories and love of a variety of music will be greatly missed by his family. He loved family get-togethers, remembering by-gone days and spending time with his wife, children, grand children and great grand children. We will miss him and know that he has been welcomed by all who left before him. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Elizabeth Mowbray, James Radcliffe Jones, Jr., Naomi Wheatley, Miriam Gray, Lee M. Jones, Ethel Garing, Mace N. Jones, Nellie Mae Butts and Thomas A. Jones. Dad requested expressions of sympathy go to Green Bank Cemetery, c/o James Jones, III, 2125 Silver Goose Road, Cambridge MD 21613 and Snip Tuck, Inc (Spay/Neuter Program) P O Box 502, Cambridge MD 21613.
