EAST NEW MARKET Robert L. Lyons, Lt Col. Ret. Army, 82, of East New Market, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2010 at Dorchester General Hospital. Born on June 19, 1928 in Windy Hill, Talbot County, he was the son of the late Frederick Vaughn Lyons and Mary Irene Lauck Lyons. In 1944, he served for a short time during WWII in the US Navy, enlisting at the age of 15. He re-enlisted in the Army in 1947, serving in Korea and Vietnam. He attended Infantry Officers Candidate School, achieving officer rank. He also attended Basic Airborne and Jump Master School in Ft. Benning, Ga.; Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas; US Army Special Warfare School and Quartermaster School Instructor Training Courses both in Ft. Bragg, NC. During his year in the Navy he was assigned to 11th BC Battalion on the USS Currituck AV-7 in the South Pacific. In the Army, he was assigned to the 3rd Mechanized Calvary Squadron, 7th Infantry Division, 5th Regimental Combat Team in Korea and 101st Airborne Division. Among the many ribbons and medals he received throughout his career, he was most proud of his Purple Heart, Silver Star and two Bronze Stars. After his retirement from the Army he owned and operated several restaurants in Ocean City. He was a member of Cambridge American Legion Post 91, The National Order of Battlefield Commissions, and Fifth Regimental Combat Team Association He is survived by two sons, Rick Lyons of Ocean Pines and Jerry Lyons of Glen Burnie; three daughters, Sharrye Schlerf and her husband Gary of Catonsville, Md., Julie Donahue and her husband Jeff of Bishopville, and Leslie Scott of Chandler, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren, Cheryl Schmidt, Jerry Lyons, Jr., David Lyons, Maj. Chris Farlow USAF, Carey Farlow, PFC Brandon Oakley US Army who is serving in Afghanistan, Sarah Donahue, Blair Donahue, Air Crewman Matthew Bunting US Navy, and James Bunting; four great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Richard Lyons, Jr. and a sister, Betty Dayton. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sep. 27, 2010, at 12:30 p.m. at the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market where the family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Mr. David Tolley will officiate. Interment will follow in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Beulah where full honors will be accorded.
