CAMBRIDGE - Robert Henry Johnson Sr., age 68, passed away Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, at Dorchester General Hospital. He was born June 20, 1943, in Cambridge, Md., to the late James Johnson Sr. and Laurice Nettie Mae Johnson. "Bobby" as he was affectionately known received his formal education at Maces Lane High School graduating in the class of 1961. There he participated in the Track & Field program, Glee, and Drama Clubs. He also attended Maryland State College where he participated in the Air Force ROTC program. He then enlisted in the Air Force in 1965 and served 3 years in Okinawa, Japan, New Jersey and New Mexico. He later served several years in the Air Force Reserves. He was employed with Caldwell Castings in his early years. He later became the Lead Electrical Lineman Supervisor at Delmarva Power Company, where he retired after 30 years of service. During the sixties, Bobby participated in the civil rights movement in Cambridge. He marched with students from Maryland State College and when he was home on breaks he also participated with other local civil rights leaders. He was the 1st African American man to apply for membership to the Cambridge Fire & Rescue Company. In March 1984, Bobby received a Commendable Service Award for having acted in a positive and proper manner in providing needed assistance while saving two people in distress while employed at Delmarva Power. He received additional recognition from the State Senator for that incident. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #223 and member of the Herman Hughes American Legion Post #87 for 26 years. Bobby was known for his fun loving, genuinely caring, and joking ways. He was also very fond of children, just ask any of his grandkids, nieces and nephews. He was very outgoing and although he was faced with challenging disabilities, he never let it stop him from doing exactly what he wanted to do, and he inspired and encouraged others to do the same. He leaves to cherish his memory four children, Sheila Jones (DeAdrein) of Cambridge, Glen Wilson Sr. of Dover, Del., Christal Dixon of Atlantic City, N.J., and Robert Johnson Jr. of Hagerstown, Md.; one daughter-in-law, Malvene Johnson; three sisters, Coleta Lee (Boyd), Teresa Banks (Richard) and Ruth Molock (Leo); one brother, Guy Major, all of Cambridge; seven aunts, Ruth Clash of Cambridge, Bessie Johnson, Dorothy Gross, both of Washington, D.C., Mary Doughty of Wilmington, Del., Georgia Fields of Woodlawn, Md., Serena Robinson of Baltimore, Md., and Kathleen Ely of Woodlawn, Md.; 12 grandchildren, Shantell Roberts, Darrell Dixon, Shayla Woods, Glen Wilson Jr., Tyrell Dixon, Jada Woods, Kyrell Dixon, Mya Woods, Mi-yell Dixon, Jeremiah Johnson, Markell Dixon, and Kaylah Johnson; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends including the love of his life Joanne Keene. He was preceeded in death by his brother, James Johnson Jr.; son, Eddie Wilson; and great-granddaughter, Tylour Marie Long. Services will be 1 p.m., Saturday, at Bethel AME Church, Cambridge, with a viewing Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements Henry Funeral Home PA.
