CAMDEN — Caesar Rodney High kept the pace up the whole game and maintained its win streak against Dover High on Tuesday night.

The Riders never trailed in a 63-51 Henlopen North boys’ basketball victory over the Senators. Caesar Rodney improved to 6-2 in the Henlopen North and 8-2 overall.

Davione Robinson led the Riders with 19 points while Shaft Clark added 16.

“We executed the whole time, all four quarters,” Robinson said. “We stayed on everything, made sure we were doing the small things that would help us get the win.”

It was the fourth win in a row for Caesar Rodney against the Senators and the second this season. The Riders won at Dover 80-67 on Dec. 8.

“It’s always a big win when you play your rival and come out with the win,” Robinson said.

CR coach Freeman Williams credited an up-tempo style for how the Riders were able to take control of the game.

The Riders threw either a fullcourt press or a halfcourt trap at Dover for most of the contest. They were successful in forcing turnovers which led to numerous open layups.

“We liked the pace of the game and I thought we played really solid defense especially in the beginning of the game,” Williams said. “We were able to string multiple stops together. Offensively we settled down and were able to put the ball in Shaft’s or Davione’s hands at different times. I was really happy with our effort throughout the game.”

Caesar Rodney’s advantage was at double-digits for most of the game until Dover went on a 9-2 run to cut it to 33-24 in the third quarter.

William Burke connected on a thee-pointer for CR to halt the Dover run and bring CR’s lead to 36-24. The Riders forced a Dover turnover on the next possession and Tim Spence made a three of his own for a 15-point lead.

Robinson finished off a quick 8-0 run with a steal and a layup. Dover turned the ball over three times in a row as CR reestablished a double-figure lead.

“The mentality is we want to be hard-nosed defensively,” Williams said. “We know if we’re playing good defense it will lead to some offensive opportunities. I thought we did a nice job forcing turnovers and getting the tempo where we really wanted it.”

Spence chipped in 13 points for the Riders.

Dover dropped to 4-9 on the season and 2-7 in the Henlopen North. The Senators were led by Eric White’s 18 points.

Elijah Allen was the only other Dover player to reach double-figures with 11 points.
