SEAFORD - Richard T. (Dick) Collison of Seaford succumbed to cancer on October 14, 2013 after a courageous 18-year battle. He was born on December 17, 1938 in Upper Darby Township, Pa., the only child of the late Richard M. Collison and Evelyn Farrow Collison Hudson. Dick graduated from Greenwood High School in 1956 and the Salisbury Barber School in 1957. He started his barber career at Dove's Barber & Smoke Shop on Seaford's High Street and worked there until 1966 when he opened his own shop, the iconic Dick's Barber Shop, where he continued to work until his final hospitalization. Dick was involved in many community service organizations including the Seaford Jaycess of which he was named Outstanding Jaycee of the Year in 1965. The Seaford Elks awarded him their Distinguished Citizenship Award in 2003. He was a member of the Downtown Seaford Association, also serving as president. Dick was awarded the John A. Moore, Jr. and Helen M. Moore Community Service Award in 2007. He will likely be best remembered for his service to the Seaford Volunteer Fire Department. He joined the department in 1965, was named Fireman of the Year in 1980, and became a lifetime member in 1990. He assisted with most fire calls by directing traffic in front of his barber shop, pausing many haircuts mid-stream to help emergency vehicles get onto High Street faster and safer. Dick sang in several barbershop quartets for over 30 years. His singing days ended in 2001 after a laryngectomy resulting from throat cancer. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley Chalmers Collison; two sons, R. Mark Collison (Joanne) of Williamstown, N.J., and R. Michael Collison (Joanne) of Bridgeville. He leaves six grandchildren, Amanda McCabe (Patrick), Travis Collison, Lindsey Temple (William), Tara Collison (John DeMarco), Tyler Collison, and Chelsea Collison; as well as one great-granddaughter, Quinn McCabe. He is also survived by a step-sister, Janie Patterson (Ben) of Seaford. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, October 21, 2013 at Mount Olivet Church, High Street, Seaford, with funeral services immediately following. Burial will be in St. Johnstown Cemetery in Greenwood. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Seaford Volunteer Fire Department, P.O.
