Request for cell tower at Ocean View school nixed

GEORGETOWN — Indian River School District has given the silent treatment to a request for a cell tower at Lord Baltimore Elementary School in Ocean View.

At their meeting Monday, board of education members did not motion the proposal from Site ID for a vote, effectively killing the pitch for a lease.

Through Site ID, ARX Wireless, a regional developer of cell tower facilities, had sought a lease agreement to place one on the school’s property along Atlantic Avenue.

“We have had several approaches over the years for a cell tower site at Lord Baltimore. I’m not in favor of it for a variety of reasons,” said board member Dr. Donald Hattier. “And I am still not convinced that the use of all the microwaves that would be generated around young, developing bodies is a good idea. That is just the chiropractor in me. Let’s keep them away from that if we can.”

The request was initially discussed during a Buildings & Grounds Committee meeting.

“We brought it to the board simply because it is something that everybody should basically be deciding on,” Dr. Hattier said.

Board president Rodney Layfield’s call for a motion drew no response; thus, it died on the table.

Dr. Hattier also noted that the lease offer was only $800 per month.

“Certainly, the amount of money being offered to use the space was not significant in any way from a business perspective,” he said.
