DELMAR - Rebekah D. Sturgis, 83, of Delmar and Salisbury, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. She was born in Buffalo, N.Y., a daughter of the late Cyrus L. Dirickson and Frances H. Dirickson. In 1946 she moved to the Eastern Shore with her family and finished high school at Wicomico High School, graduating with the class of 1950. She completed two years of college at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro before marrying Jack H. Sturgis of Eastville and Salisbury. After raising her children, she attended Salisbury State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies and Masters in Education. She then entered the workforce as an addictions counselor and ended her working career as an administrator. She is survived by three sons: Carroll Sturgis of Crisfield, Hunter Scott Sturgis of Milford and John Sturgis of Harleysville, Pa.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Marjorie Ressler of Camden, Del.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Cyrus B. and William Dirickson. Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
