
DOVER - Raymond Owen Eddy, Former UD Dean of Students, died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013. Born in Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich,, he was the son of the late Raymond William Eddy and Cadais Lucille Owen Eddy. Ray graduated from Grosse Pointe High School, and Wayne University, in Detroit, Mich., where he received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Bucknell University, in Lewisburg, Pa., where he received a Master of Science in Education. Over his lifetime he experienced three different careers; Upon graduation from college he served six years in the United States Air Force as a regular commissioned officer with assignments in Texas, Florida, Alaska (stationed at a base 150 miles north of the Arctic Circle for 12 months) and Pennsylvania. In 1962, he resigned his commission and went to work at Upsala College in East Orange, N.J. as Director of Student Personnel Services. In 1966, he went to Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa. as Assistant Dean of Men while he pursued his Masters in Science in Education degree. In 1969, he went to the University of Delaware as Associate Dean. Within the first year he was promoted to Dean of Men and then Dean of Students, a position he served in for fourteen years. In 1984, he gave up the deanship to enter training at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic, Children's Hospital, to become a family therapist, training which he planned to use when he retired. For the next seven years he served as Coordinator of Greek Affairs and Special Programs at the University of Delaware while doing family therapy at the Newark Family Counseling Center in the evenings. As a result of budget cuts he left the University of Delaware in 1991 and went to work full-time between the Newark Family Counseling Center (Del.) and Family Services Association of Cecil County (Md.). In 1992, he was hired as a full-time family therapist at Family Services. In 1993, he was promoted to Vice President for Client Services. In 1998, he was promoted to Vice President for Contractual Services and also served for a brief time as Interim Chief Executive Officer of the agency. During his working years Ray had several one-of-a-kind experiences. In 1975, he was selected to attend the six-week Institute for Educational Management conducted by the Harvard School of Business. In 1999, he underwent Aviation Disaster Training at LaGuardia Airport in New York. In late October/November he spent twelve days working with the families of victims of the Egyptair 990 crash in Rhode Island. In addition to his duties at the University of Delaware he served as advisor to Alpha Phi Omega and Gamma Sigma Sigma, National Service Fraternity/Sorority, Advisor to the Lutheran Student Association, Member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Advisor and Honorary Member of Kappa Delta Rho National Fraternity. Over his lifetime he believed that his faith and being of service to others were important things to practice and do. Within the greater community he served as a member of the City of Newark Alcohol Abuse Commission; as Vice Chairperson of the Lenape District of the Boy Scouts of America; as Vice President for Programs for the Exchange Club of Newark; as a volunteer at the Upper Chesapeake Chapter of the American Red Cross; was a member of the Pastoral Care Team at Union Hospital, Elkton (Md.), and served as a volunteer visitor for Seasons and Community Hospice, Elkton, (Md.). Ray would often share with others that he was born Presbyterian, married into the Lutheran Church and finally fell into the Episcopal Church. As was the case in the greater community, Ray served as a licensed lay reader, chalicist, and lay Eucharistic visitor in the Episcopal Church. He served in these capacities at Augustine Parish, Chesapeake City (Md.), Trinity Episcopal Church, Elkton (Md.) and St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Smyrna (Del.). He also served as Lay Director for the Secretariat of the Cursillo Movement in the Diocese of Easton (Md.) and served as a member of team on several weekends. He also served as Vice President of the Martin Luther Foundation, Inc., Wilmington (Del.) and taught the "Word and Witness Program" at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Newark (Del.). Ray met his wife, Nan, when they played in the band together in 4th grade at Trombley School in Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. They were married upon Ray's graduation from college and over the next 56 years they lived in Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. Over their lifetime together they enjoyed camping, kayaking, and vacationing in Florida, Arizona, Maine, the Adirondacks of New York, Nova Scotia and cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska. They particularly enjoyed times together in Williamsburg, Va. Ray is survived by his wife, Nancylee (Nan); his sister, Marilyn J. Rowe and brother-in-law, Kenneth Rowe of Mich.; his brother, Thomas J. Eddy and sister-in-law, Carol L. Eddy of Mich.; his children, Rodney Thomas Eddy and daughter-in-law, Patricia of New York, Scott Owen Eddy and daughter-in-law, Sara of Md., and Michael Raymond Eddy and daughter-in-law, Dawn of Del.; seven grandchildren, Brandon T. Eddy, Ryan T. Eddy, Bryce O. Eddy, Lydia R. Eddy, Megan E. Eddy, Jake R. Eddy, and Melissa Eddy; and one great-grandchild, Julia L. Eddy. A celebration of Life service will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 22 North Union Street, Smyrna, DE on Monday, March 4, 2013 at noon. Family and friends are invited to greet the family at 10 a.m. Burial will be private at the Augustine Parish (Episcopal) Cemetery in Chesapeake City, MD.
