Rally to protest governor’s veto of cannabis bill slated in Dover

Posted

DOVER — Delaware NORML — the local chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws — announced that it will hold a rally at noon Tuesday in front of Legislative Hall to urge lawmakers to overturn Gov. John Carney’s recent veto of a key cannabis legalization bill, HB 371.

Despite a limited decriminalization bill passed in 2015, thousands of people endure police interactions over cannabis in Delaware every year, and hundreds are charged and prosecuted, according to the group. HB371 would correct some of the injustices of prohibition, the group said.

“From Claymont to Delmar, we have residents in every community of our state echoing this urgent call to action,” said Laura Sharer, DENORML executive director. “We’ve heard from countless survivors of this failed prohibition who have endured unjustifiable consequences, monumentally more than fines.”

Activists with DENORML and the Delaware Cannabis Advocacy Network kicked off a statewide campaign Memorial Day weekend urging legislators to quickly move forward with the override process.

HB371 would legalize one ounce of cannabis for adults over 21. It was passed with 26 votes in the House, enough to overturn a veto.
