Probe continues into two Sunday shootings

DOVER — Investigation continues into two shooting incidents early Sunday morning when bullets fired from a car hit an adjacent southbound vehicle on Route 13 in Dover an hour after shots were fired in the parking lot of a restaurant near Cheswold.

Pending further investigation, police don’t know if the incidents were related.

The vehicle struck by bullets was traveling near the main entrance of Delaware State University at about 1:30 a.m., Dover Police said. Just over an hour earlier — shortly after midnight — shots were fired in the parking lot of Jazzy Jay’s Soul Food Cafe near Cheswold about four miles north.

Police say the shots fired at the vehicle on Route 13 came from a black four-door vehicle traveling in the same direction. The shooter opened fire near the intersection.

After the target car was hit by bullets its 29-year-old driver swerved and struck a traffic signal at the intersection. Neither the driver or a 17-year-old passenger reported injuries.

Both driver’s side windows were shattered by the gunfire, said Dover Police Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman.

The reason for the shooting is unknown.

“It appears random, but such incidents are extremely rare, nearly unheard of, in our area,” he said. “Our detectives are investigating to find out the reason this may have occurred.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Dover Police Department at (302) 736-7111. Callers may remain anonymous. Tips can also be submitted to law enforcement through tip lines maintained by Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or on-line at http://www.tipsubmit.com.

Delaware State Police said that shots were fired earlier just after midnight in the area of a large crowd at Jazzy Jay’s. By the time troopers arrived the majority of the crowd had dispersed, said state police. Several witnesses were interviewed and confirmed that shots were heard coming from the parking lot of the business.

However, they were unable to provide any suspect information.

No victims have been identified and no reports of injury stemming from this incident had been received.

The case remains under investigation.

The DSP asks that anyone with information contact Lt. G. Windish at 302-697-4454 or 302-698-8453.
